Dysregulated monocyte-derived macrophage response to Group B Streptococcus in newborns
DiscussionAltogether, the production of excessive levels of Th1- (IL-12p70), Th17-related (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-23) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines is consistent with a dysregulated response to GBS in newborns. The high responsiveness of newborn MDMs may play a role in the progression of GBS infection in newborns, possibly contributing to the development of life-threatening organ dysfunction. Vaccine value profile for Group B streptococcus
Vaccine. 2023 Nov 3;41 Suppl 2:S41-S52. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.04.024. Epub 2023 Oct 6.ABSTRACTGroup B streptococcus (GBS) is a major global cause of neonatal meningitis, sepsis and pneumonia, with an estimated 91,000 infant deaths per year and an additional 46,000 stillbirths. GBS infection in pregnancy is also associated with adverse maternal outcomes and preterm births. As such, the World Health Organization (WHO) prioritised the development of a GBS vaccine suitable for use in pregnant women and use in LMICs, where the burden of disease is highest. Several GBS vaccines are in clinical development. The WHO Defeatin...

A Multicenter Study on the Utility of Selective Enrichment Broth for Detection of Group B Streptococcus in Pregnant Women in Japan
Jpn J Infect Dis. 2023 Oct 31. doi: 10.7883/yoken.JJID.2023.295. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUniversal screening for Streptococcus agalactiae, Group B Streptococcus (GBS), in pregnant women is important for preventing severe infectious diseases in neonates. The subculture method using selective enrichment broth has been reported to significantly improve GBS detection in the US; however, this method is not widely practiced in Japan. An insufficiency of large-scale validation is one of the reasons; therefore, we validated the utility of the subculture method in collaboration with multiple facilities. A total of 1957 vagina...
