Catheter-related gas-forming suppurative thrombophlebitis
We present a case of catheter-related gas-forming suppurative thrombophlebitis due to Clostridium perfringens infection. Gas-forming thrombus around the catheter can be useful findings for the early diagnosis of catheter-related clostridial thrombophlebitis. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

A career in solving clinical-pathological conundrums: Heyde syndrome, anti-platelet factor 4 disorders, and microvascular limb ischemic necrosis
Int J Lab Hematol. 2024 Mar 3. doi: 10.1111/ijlh.14261. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHematology is a clinical specialty with strong roots in the laboratory; accordingly, the lab can help solve perplexing clinical problems. This review highlights clinical-pathological conundrums addressed during my 35-year hematology career at McMaster University. Heyde syndrome is the association between aortic stenosis and bleeding gastrointestinal (GI) angiodysplasia where the bleeding is usually cured by aortic valve replacement; the chance reading of a neonatal study showing reversible deficiency of high-molecular-weight (HMW) multime...

Mobile health technologies to improve walking distance in people with intermittent claudication
CONCLUSIONS: Mobile health technologies can be used to provide lifestyle interventions for people with chronic conditions, such as IC. We identified a limited number of studies that met our inclusion criteria. We found no clear difference between mhealth and usual care in improving absolute walking distance in people with IC; however, we judged the evidence to be low certainty. Larger, well-designed RCTs are needed to provide adequate statistical power to reliably evaluate the effects of mhealth technologies on walking distance in people with IC.PMID:38353263 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014717.pub2 (Source: Cochrane Database ...

Digital Gangrene Associated with Scrub Typhus: A Case Series
We report three cases of scrub fever (55-year-old female, 63-year-old female, and 29-year-old male), all cases developed focal or pan-digital gangrene. All cases were successfully treated by administering doxycycline and additional supportive measures. Digital gangrene is uncommon in scrub typhus. Clinical suspension for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment may avoid further complications.PMID:38350131 | DOI:10.4269/ajtmh.23-0596 (Source: Am J Trop Med Hyg)
