Meek Micrografting Technique for Reconstruction of Extensive Necrotizing Fasciitis of the Anterior Abdomen and Bilateral Femoral Region: A Case Report
Arch Plast Surg. 2023 Aug 24;50(6):610-614. doi: 10.1055/a-2077-5745. eCollection 2023 Nov.ABSTRACTNecrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon yet fatal soft tissue infection. Current recommended treatment includes antibiotics with repeat surgical exploration and wound debridement followed by reconstruction. In burn patients, the Meek micrograft has demonstrated a higher true expansion ratio, faster reepithelialization rate, more resilient toward infection, and reduced risk of graft failure as compared with meshed graft. To our best knowledge, the use of Meek micrografting technique in reconstruction of postdebridement wounds of ...

Prenatal Torsion of Radial Polydactyly: A Gangrenous Mass at the Base of the Thumb
Acta Med Okayama. 2023 Dec;77(6):651-653. doi: 10.18926/AMO/66158.ABSTRACTA patient was born with a mass at the base of the thumb approximately 1.5 cm in diameter on the radial side of the fingers. The mass had globular swelling filled with hemorrhagic fluid and was dark red. X-rays and histology of the excised specimen suggested the diagnosis of gangrene and torsion of polydactyly. Prenatal torsion of polydactyly is not a common occurrence; moreover, prenatal torsion of polydactyly has only been found in ulnar polydactyly. Our case is a novel case of radial polydactyly that was gangrenous at birth owing to prenatal torsio...

News at a glance: Climate summit booed, a big dino bite, and a diamond-hard discovery
PALEONTOLOGY Near-perfect pliosaur skull hints at big bite A U.K. team that includes amateur fossil hunters is studying the recently discovered skull of a pliosaur, a large, carnivorous marine reptile that dominated ancient oceans about 150 million years ago, news media reported last week. The specimen was found in 2022 embedded in a cliff along Dorset’s famed Jurassic Coast, where the pioneering 19th century amateur fossil hunter Mary Anning once discovered skeletons of other marine dinosaurs. Scientists are calling the new skull, about 2 meters long, one of the most complete of its kind. After me...

Comprehensive identification of metabolites and metabolic characteristics of luteolin and kaempferol in Simiao Yong'an Decoction in rats by UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap MS/MS
This study employed ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with linear ion trap-Orbitrap mass spectrometry(UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap MS/MS) and relevant software to identify the metabolites and metabolic pathways of luteolin and kaempferol in rat plasma, urine, and feces, after oral administration of luteolin and kaempferol, respectively. After the administration of luteolin, 10, 11, and 3 metabolites of luteolin were detected in the plasma, urine, and feces, respectively. After the administration of kaempferol, 9, 3, and 1 metabolites of kaempferol were detected in the plasma, urine, and feces, respectively. The metabol...

Associations between specialty care and improved outcomes among patients with diabetic foot ulcers
by Yingzhou Liu, Menggang Yu, Jamie N. LaMantia, Jennifer Mason Lobo, Justin J. Boutilier, Yao Liu, Meghan B. Brennan ObjectiveSpecialty care may improve diabetic foot ulcer outcomes. Medically underserved populations receive less specialty care. We aimed to determine the association between specialty care and ulcer progression, major amputation, or death. If a beneficial association is found, increasing access to specialty care might help advance health equity. Research design and methodsWe retrospectively analyzed a cohort of Wisconsin and Illinois Medicare patients with diabetic foot ulcers (n = 55,409), stratified by u...
