Independence in Content Moderation
John SamplesSocial media managers cannot tolerate all speech on their platforms. They are obligated to maximize value for their shareholders. Leaving some kinds of speech on a platform would drive some users away. So social media managers establish rules intended to maximize the number of users. Managers also hire content moderators to enforce the rules. Users that get thrown off have no complaint. When they joined the platform, they agreed to the rules and to how they are enforced. End of story.Except it ’s not the end of the story. Social media managers do not seem to believe that mutual consent to rules and their appl...

The Republican Party ’s Confusion on Trade
David BoazThere ’s been a lot oftalk this week about what today ’s Republican Partystands for. Is it still the Buckley ‐Reagan fusionist platform of of lower taxes, less regulation, traditional values, and a strong national defense? Is it George W. Bush ’s “compassionate conservatism”? Trump’s “America First,” which always seemed less ideological than most platforms? The talk heated up when the GOP announced that it wouldn ’t produce a party platform for the first time in memory, and the Republican National Committeeunanimously voted in lieu of a platform its “undivided sup...

A Two Part Interview with Greg Bailey of Juvenescence
Juvenescence and Life Biosciences are presently the two large business development companies in the growing longevity industry. They act much like venture funds, in that they create or take controlling positions in biotech startups, but are organized as companies in structure, with the ability to later go public. The resulting entity looks much like a Big Pharma company with many subsidiaries. It is quite possible to do this at a smaller scale and bootstrap towards much the same end goal - see Ichor Therapeutics and its portfolio companies, for example. Greg Bailey is one of the cofounders of Juvenescence, alongside...

Brain Teaser: How to choose the right shirt size
You have been invited to a fundraising gala at your old college (via Zoom of course) and decide that this black-tie event demands a super white Italian shirt, like the one you bought years ago for your wedding. When you find and bravely try the wedding shirt on (size 16), your wife notices that the collar suffocates you — you DO need about 1/4″ more space everywhere in-between your neck and the collar all around your neck. So you’ll need a new shirt. What size shirt do you need to buy?  PS1: In case you don’t know, shirt size 16 means that a tape wrapped around your neck and two fingers positioned flat upfront...

The Moonshot Venture Fellowship at Apollo Ventures
One of the more productive strategies undertaken by advocates and venture firms in the longevity industry is to put effort into the creation of companies, rather than waiting for companies to arise. This is still a small, young industry, without the sizable ecosystem that attends more mature areas of biotechnology, and thus many, many lines of research that might be productively developed into therapies targeting the mechanisms of aging remain stuck in academia. For investors and advocates to change this state of affairs requires building connections in the research community, introducing researchers and entrepreneurs, and...

Happy 90th Birthday, Ed Clark
David BoazEd Clark, the 1980 Libertarian Party presidential nominee, turns 90  years old on May 4. Now that Rep. Justin Amash has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2020 nomination, I thought I’d offer some reminiscences about the earlier campaign. In my misguided youth I  was a teenage Young Democrat, a College Republican, and a young adult Libertarian Party activist, before I gave up politics for ideas and policy. In 1978, a few years out of college, I left my conservative job to become co‐manager of Ed Clark’s campaign for Governor of California on t he Libertarian ticket. (He was actually on the ball...

This study, for the first time, shows that transplantation of non-autologous mitochondria from healthy skeletal muscle cells into normal cardiomyocytes leads to short-term improvement of bioenergetics indicating "supercharged" state. However, over time these improved effects disappear, which suggests transplantation of mitochondria may have a potential application in settings where there is an acute stress. Ronjon Nag on Investment in the Longevity Industry
Ronjon Nag is a noted angel investor in the Bay Area, and one of the newer entries to the select community of investors interested in the longevity industry. He brings his own perspective to the table; new points of view are always welcome as the community grows in size, and as more narrowly focused specialists begin to emerge. That said, given the enormous venture funding still in waiting, looking for places to invest, there is always the perverse incentive for fund managers to consider the space of aging and longevity in the broadest sense possible. There is a pressure to invest now, invest soon, find more deals to parti...

The End of an Era
John SamplesNo, not the end of the Trump Era. Or the Obama Era. Or an “era” named after a politician, including the Reagan Era. Or even the end of the New Deal, or the Great Society, or whatever. It ’s actually the end of the era of campaign finance “reform,” born in 1969 died in 2020. Many people helped end this era, among them Barack Obama (whose fundraising prowess destroyed the presidential public finance program) and Donald Trump (who showed that you could capture a major party ’s nomination without spending “big money.”) But it was Michael Bloomberg that actually ended the era.A political era...

This joins an existing list of genes for which expression changes are known to impact mitochondrial function with age. A herd of hundreds of mitochondria are found...

Views on Investment in the Longevity Industry
Today I'll point out a couple of short interviews on the topic of investment in the longevity industry. This industry is young and still quite small, taking its present shape over the last five years or so. There are a little more than a hundred companies in the industry, a dozen venture funds that make significant numbers of investments, and - as of yet - no approved drugs emerged from phase III trials. Most programs are still at a preclinical stage of development. From the archly conservative perspective of Big Pharma and the largest established biotech venture funds, this whole endeavor remains an experiment in its earl...
