Access for all: Research at the National Abortion Federation ’s 47th Annual Meeting
It has been almost 2 years since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women ’s Health Organization decision was handed down resulting in sweeping abortion restrictions and bans in nearly half of the United States. However, the demand for abortion remains unchanged, and, despite restrictions, the number of abortions in the United States has remained steady [1]. Increased funding and support in states that remain friendly to abortion seekers, telemedicine abortion care, shield law provision, and increased public awareness about abortion access have all helped people get the care they need. Azithromycin therapy for prevention of chronic lung disease of prematurity (AZTEC): a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2024 Apr 25:S2213-2600(24)00079-1. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(24)00079-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Systematic reviews have reported conflicting evidence on whether macrolide antibiotics reduce rates of chronic lung disease of prematurity (CLD) in at-risk preterm infants born at less than 30 weeks' gestation, including in those colonised with pulmonary Ureaplasma spp. Since an adequately powered trial has been lacking, we aimed to assess if the macrolide azithromycin improved survival without the development of physiologically defined moderate or severe CLD in preterm infants.METHODS: AZTEC ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1708: Prognosis and Treatment of Gastric Cancer: A 2024 Update
l Samasca Due to the high death rate associated with gastric cancer, a great deal of research has been conducted on this disease. The goal of this paper was to start a trimestral review of 2024 for the year that had just started. The scientific literature from 1 January 2024 was chosen with consideration of the the guidelines of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), which are updated with new findings but not systematically reviewed annually. We used the search term “gastric cancer” to find the most current publications in the PubMed database related to the prognosis and treatment...

The role of helplines in the anti-trafficking space: examining contacts to a major ‘modern slavery’ hotline
We examined who seeks help, why and what follows. Contrary to stereotypes, relatively few cases involved sexual exploitation.  Many case characteristics varied significantly by exploitation type. Reports about car washes and beauty services heavily influenced overall trends, likely reflecting intense public focus on these sites. Most cases involved adults. Although people self-reporting exploitation are the core target au dience, only around 1 in 10 cases derived from self-reports (with higher rates for domestic servitude). We show how third-party reporters vary in their proximity to the people about whom they raise conce...

Application of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to Prioritize Real-World Evidence Studies for Health Technology Management: Outcomes and Lessons Learned by the Canadian Real-World Evidence for Value of Cancer Drugs (CanREValue) Collaboration
Curr Oncol. 2024 Apr 1;31(4):1876-1898. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040141.ABSTRACTMulti-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a value assessment tool designed to help support complex decision-making by incorporating multiple factors and perspectives in a transparent, structured approach. We developed an MCDA rating tool, consisting of seven criteria evaluating the importance and feasibility of conducting potential real-world evidence (RWE) studies aimed at addressing uncertainties stemming from initial cancer drug funding recommendations. In collaboration with the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health's Provinci...

Curr Oncol. 2024 Mar 29;31(4):1803-1816. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040136.ABSTRACTPatient access to new oncology drugs in Canada is only possible after navigating multiple sequential systemic checkpoints for national regulatory approval, health technology assessment (HTA) and collective government price negotiation. These steps delay access and prevent health care providers from being able to prescribe optimal therapy. Eighteen Canadian oncology clinicians from the medicine, nursing and pharmacy professions met to develop consensus recommendations for defining reasonable government performance standards around process and ti...
