Am J Dermatopathol. 2023 Apr 1;45(4):227-234. doi: 10.1097/DAD.0000000000002312.ABSTRACTFelix von Bärensprung was a pioneer of dermatopathology. His monograph of 1848, "Contributions to the Anatomy and Pathology of the Human Skin," was one of the first publications on that subject. Von Bärensprung also described and named erythrasma, elucidated the pathogenesis of herpes zoster, contributed a comprehensive review of the history of dermatology in an unfinished textbook of skin diseases, and was coauthor, together with Ferdinand Hebra of Vienna, of one of the most influential clinical atlases in the history of dermatology....

The effect of flavonols in < em > Anacardium occidentale < /em > L. leaf extracts on skin pathogenic microorganisms
Nat Prod Res. 2022 Aug 23:1-4. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2022.2112038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) leaf is traditionally used to treat skin infections. Although many flavonols have been identified from its leaf extract, their inhibitory effects on skin pathogens are not yet determined. The aims of this study were to determine the antimicrobial (against skin pathogenic microbes) and antioxidant activities of four flavonol glycosides from the crude extract and three flavonol aglycones from the hydrolyzed extract. The hydrolyzed extract was found to show higher activities than the crude extrac...

Corynebacterium Minutissimum: Isolation and Infections in Cancer Patients
We report 3 cases of C. minutissimum infection in immunocompromised patients at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and review the literature. In such rare diseases, proper infection control guidelines, prompt prophylaxis, and treatment with antibiotics will maximize benefits in these patients. A study of biophysical profile of inguinal skin: An implication for health and disease
Conclusion: Raised skin pH disturbs organization of lipid bilayers (disturbed barrier), decreases lipid processing (impaired SC cohesion), and increases serine protease activity (reduced AMP). Increased TEWL (defect in physical barrier) and decreased hydration predispose the genital skin to infections. Use of pH buffered solutions (3–4), barrier repair creams containing ceramides, and barrier protective creams with dimethicone can help prevent these inguinal dermatoses. Subungual Nail Erythrasma Presenting as Melanonychia: A Rare Finding
We report a case of a 78-year-old man who presented with melanonychia of the great toe. Nail clipping showed focal melanin deposition, and dermoscopy demonstrated a region of localized erythema in the lunula concerning for possible melanocytic neoplasm. Subsequent nail biopsy showed numerous vertically oriented filamentous bacteria and coccobacilli within the nail plate consistent with a diagnosis of subungual nail erythrasma. Nail erythrasma is a rare entity. Additionally, this case highlights a new clinical presentation of nail erythrasma as melanonychia.Skin Appendage Disord (Source: Skin Appendage Disorders)
