Vonoprazan versus lansoprazole for healing and maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis: a randomized trial
For decades, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been the mainstay of treatment for erosive esophagitis. The potassium-competitive acid blocker vonoprazan provides more potent acid inhibition than PPIs but data on its efficacy for erosive esophagitis are limited. (Source: Gastroenterology)

Factors Associated with Increased Severity of Erosive Esophagitis 1 Year After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
ConclusionThe prevalence and severity of EE increased after LSG. Male gender and post-operative hiatal hernia are independent factors for an increased severity of EE after LSG. The incidence of severe EE after LSG is low for patients without pre-operative EE or grade A EE at baseline.Graphical abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

Positive and negative impact of anti-reflux mucosal intervention on gastroesophageal reflux disease
ConclusionsARMI is generally effective and safe in PPI-dependent patients. However, possible negative effects of ARMI exist in some patients; further application of MII-pH is necessitated to evaluate the treatment response after ARMI and avoid the detrimental effect of PPI discontinuation.Graph.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Clinical Endoscopic and Histologic Findings of a Long-Term Follow-Up (10.7 Years) After Roux-en-Y Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass: a Prospective Study
ConclusionLYGB is a very effective surgical procedure to control symptoms of GERD and/or endoscopic erosive esophagitis. Besides, regression of Barrett ’s mucosa to carditis occurred in 62%.Graphical abstract (Source: Obesity Surgery)

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with Rossetti fundoplication: long-term (5-year) follow-up
CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with Rossetti fundoplication is well tolerated, feasible, and safe in patients with obesity, providing adequate weight loss results and complete resolution of clinical signs of GERD. We have recorded an improvement in esophagitis lesions present at preoperative gastroscopy and complete resolution of Barrett's esophagus within 5 years of follow-up.PMID:35760673 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2022.05.012 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Network Meta-analysis Comparing Vonoprazan and Proton Pump Inhibitors for Heartburn Symptoms in Erosive Esophagitis
Conclusions: In this study, vonoprazan 20 mg QD was equally effective in heartburn resolution on Day 1, and equally or more effective on Day 7 versus PPIs in adults with erosive esophagitis. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)

Expression of VEGF, EGF, and Their Receptors in Squamous Esophageal Mucosa, with Correlations to Histological Findings and Endoscopic Minimal Changes, in Patients with Different GERD Phenotypes
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a correlation between growth factors expression and findings in conventional endoscopy, formation of endoscopic minimal changes, and histologic lesions.PMID:35564692 | DOI:10.3390/ijerph19095298 (Source: Cell Research)

The Discrepancy Between Subjective and Objective Clinical Endpoints in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Therapeutic outcome in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is commonly determined by both subjective and objective clinical endpoints. Clinicians frequently use symptom improvement as a key benchmark of clinical success, in conjunction with normalization of objective parameters such as esophageal acid exposure and inflammation. However, GERD therapeutic trials have demonstrated that a substantial number of patients rendered asymptomatic, whether through medical, surgical, or endoscopic intervention, continue to have persistent abnormal esophageal acid exposure and erosive esophagitis. The opposite has also been demonstr...

The Hill ’s Classification Is Useful to Predict the Development of Postoperative Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Erosive Esophagitis After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
ConclusionPostoperative GERD and EE remain an important limitation following LSG. Proper preoperative assessment using the Hill ’s classification can help to accurately predict patients at risk of postoperative GERD and EE. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery)
