Abomasal lesions found in postmortem examination of fattening Holstein-Friesian bulls from central Poland
This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of lesions found in the abomasum of Polish fattening Holstein-Friesian bulls. A total of 149 abomasa from adult bulls from two voivodeships of central Poland were inspected for pathologicalanatomic position (displacement, volvulus), impaction, mucosal membrane lesions (inflammation, hyperplasia), and signs of parasite infestation(Moroccan leather, worm nodules) in one of the Polish abattoirs just after slaughter. Among all the examined males no lesions were observed in only 8 individuals. The most common findings were erosions (75.8%) and type 1 ulcerations (48.3%) of the body, p...

Mapping from SIBDQ to EQ-5D-5L for patients with inflammatory bowel disease
ConclusionWe developed an algorithm mapping SIBDQ values to EQ-5D-5L index scores for different sets of covariates in IBD patients. It is implemented in the following web application:https://www.bwl.uni-hamburg.de/hcm/forschung/mapping.html. (Source: The European Journal of Health Economics)

Self-interest, positional concerns and distributional considerations in healthcare preferences
AbstractEfficiently allocating scarce healthcare resources requires nuanced understanding of individual and collective interests as well as relative concerns, which may overlap or conflict. This paper is the first to empirically investigate whether and to what extent self-interest (SI), positional concerns (PC) and distributional considerations (DC) simultaneously explain individual decision making related to access to healthcare services. Our investigation is based on a stated choice experiment conducted in two countries with different healthcare systems, the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK). The choice expe...

Cost-effectiveness of transcatheter aortic valve implantation in patients at low surgical risk in France: a model-based analysis of the Evolut LR trial
ConclusionTAVI in patients at low surgical risk is a cost-effective alternative to SAVR in the French healthcare system. Longer follow-up data will help increase the accuracy of lifetime survival projections.Graphical Abstract (Source: The European Journal of Health Economics)

The link between physician motivation and care
AbstractStudies report an unexplained variation in physicians ’ care. This variation may to some extent be explained by differences in their work motivation. However, empirical evidence on the link between physician motivation and care is scarce. We estimate the associations between different types of work motivation and care. Motivation is measured using va lidated questions from a nation-wide survey of Danish general practices and linked to high-quality register data on their care in 2019. Using a series of regression models, we find that more financially motivated practices generate more fee-for-services per patient, ...

Secular change in heights of rural adults in west-central poland between 1986 and 2016: The transition from pre- to post-communism
Econ Hum Biol. 2024 Mar 22;53:101377. doi: 10.1016/j.ehb.2024.101377. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSecular change in the heights of adult men and women resident in ten rural communities in west-central Poland in four decennial surveys between 1986 and 2016 is considered. The adults were parents of children attending schools in rural communities in the province of Poznań. During each survey, parents of school children were asked to complete a questionnaire which requested their ages, heights and completed levels of education. Ages were reported in whole years. The self-reported heights were adjusted for the tendency of in...

The production, recovery, and valorization of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) based on circular bioeconomy
Biotechnol Adv. 2024 Mar 25:108340. doi: 10.1016/j.biotechadv.2024.108340. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs an energy-storage substance of microorganisms, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a promising alternative to petrochemical polymers. Under appropriate fermentation conditions, PHB-producing strains with metabolic diversity can efficiently synthesize PHB using various carbon sources. Carbon-rich wastes may serve as alternatives to pure sugar substrates to reduce the cost of PHB production. Genetic engineering strategies can further improve the efficiency of substrate assimilation and PHB synthesis. In the downstream link, P...

The feasibility and acceptability of an app ‐based intervention with brief behavioural support (APPROACH) to promote brisk walking in people diagnosed with breast, prostate and colorectal cancer in the UK
ConclusionsThis pilot study demonstrates that a large trial of the brisk walking intervention with behavioural support is both feasible and acceptable to people LWBC. The results support progression onto a confirmatory phase III trial to determine the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the intervention. (Source: Cancer Medicine)

The introduction of a minimum wage in Germany and the effects on physical activity participation
AbstractThe relationship between income and physical activity has been extensively studied. This paper utilizes the introduction of the minimum wage in Germany in 2015 as a quasi-experiment to determine the causal effect of minimum wages on the frequency of physical activity participation. Employing survey data from the German Socio-Economic Panel between 2013 and 2017, regression-adjusted difference-in-difference models combined with matching techniques are estimated. Our findings reveal a notable negative effect immediately after the minimum wage implementation on physical activity frequency. Given that the introduction ...

Investigating the trends and causes of changes in human anthropometric dimensions over the past three decades: a challenge for ergonomic design
Conclusion. Since the process of changes in anthropometric dimensions is not always the same, anthropometric data should be updated regularly, and work environments and equipment should be reviewed or redesigned according to the new anthropometric data.PMID:38528827 | DOI:10.1080/10803548.2024.2318945 (Source: International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics)
