Economic instability, income, and unemployment effects on mortality: using SUR panel data in Iran
This study aims to investigate the effects of socioeconomic factors on mortality in Iran. To this end, this research examines how economic instability, income, and unemployment affect mortality using a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) with panel data for 30 provinces in Iran from 2004 to 2019. The results indicate that unemployment and mortality have a countercyclical relationship among the working age-groups 20 –59 but a procyclical pattern among old-age (60+), except for rural mortality. This result is harmonious between employment and age-group mortality. This finding implies that unemployment increases mortality ...

NIH boosts pay for postdocs and graduate students
The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced pay increases today for early-career scientists who are recipients of its Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSAs), after an NIH advisory group recommended raises in December 2023 . Postdocs will now be paid at least $61,008, an increase of $4500 over their current minimum salary level—though still below the advisory group’s recommendation of $70,000. Graduate students will receive a $1000 raise, bringing their minimum to $28,224. NIH also announced a $500 increase in child care subsidies for early-career researchers who are parents. ...

Optimizing soybean biofuel blends for sustainable urban medium-duty commercial vehicles in India: an AI-driven approach
This article presents the outcomes of a research study focused on optimizing the performance of soybean biofuel blends derived from soybean seeds specifically for urban medium-duty commercial vehicles. The study took into consideration elements such as production capacity, economics and assumed engine characteristics. For the purpose of predicting performance, combustion and emission characteristics, an artificial intelligence approach that has been trained using experimental data is used. At full load, the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) dropped as engine speed increased for biofuel and diesel fuel mixes, but brake-specifi...

Economic and healthcare resource utilization assessments of pet imaging in coronary artery disease diagnosis: a systematic review and discussion of opportunities for future economic evaluations
Conclusions: This SLR identified economic and HCRU evaluations following PET- and SPECT-MPI for CAD diagnosis and determined that existing studies do not capture all pertinent outcome parameters or link diagnostic performance to downstream HCRU and cardiac outcomes, thus, resulting in simplified assessments of CAD burden. A limitation of this work relates to heterogeneity in study designs, patient populations, and follow-up times of existing studies. Resultingly, it was challenging to pool data in meta-analyses. Overall, this work provides a foundation for the development of comprehensive economic models for PET- and SPECT...

The cost-effectiveness of a bimekizumab versus IL-17A inhibitors treatment-pathway in patients with active axial spondyloarthritis in Scotland
Conclusions remained unchanged in most scenarios. Results' drivers included BASDAI50 response rate and disease management cost.CONCLUSION: The bimekizumab treatment-pathway represents a cost-effective option across the axSpA disease spectrum in Scotland. Bimekizumab is cost-effective compared to a secukinumab-pathway that includes dose up-titration, and has similar costs and QALYs to an ixekizumab-pathway.PMID:38650583 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2342209 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Phase separation methods for protein purification: A meta-analysis of purification performance and cost-effectiveness
Biotechnol J. 2024 Apr;19(4):e2400005. doi: 10.1002/biot.202400005.ABSTRACTProtein purifications based on phase separations (e.g., precipitation and liquid-liquid extraction) have seen little adoption in commercial protein drug production. To identify barriers, we analyzed the purification performance and economics of 290 phase separation purifications from 168 publications. First, we found that studies using Design of Experiments for optimization achieved significantly greater mean yield and host cell protein log10 removal values than those optimizing one factor at a time (11.5% and 53% increases, respectively). Second, b...
