A proposal to recognize investment in breastfeeding as a carbon offset
Bull World Health Organ. 2024 May 1;102(5):336-343. doi: 10.2471/BLT.23.290210. Epub 2024 Mar 7.ABSTRACTPolicy-makers need to rethink the connections between the economy and health. The World Health Organization Council on the Economics of Health for All has called for human and planetary health and well-being to be moved to the core of decision-making to build economies for health. Doing so involves valuing and measuring what matters, more and better health financing, innovation for the common good and rebuilding public sector capacity. We build on this thinking to argue that breastfeeding should be recognized in food and...

Epub 2024 Mar 27.ABSTRACTThe World Health Organization (WHO) set up the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) technology transfer programme in June 2021 with a development hub in South Africa and 15 partner vaccine producers in middle-income countries. The goal was to support the sustainable development of and access to life-saving vaccines for people in these countries as a means to enhance epidemic preparedness and global public health. This initiative aims to build resilience and strengthen local vaccine research, and development and manufacturi...

A comparison of healthcare utilization and outcomes following skin vs. serum-specific IgE allergy testing
Conclusions: Allergy testing, regardless of the testing method used, is associated with decreases in ED and UR visits at 1-year follow-up. sIgE allergy testing is associated with lower testing cost and fewer allergist/immunologist visits, compared to skin testing.PMID:38682798 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2349471 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Learning motivation and self-assessment in health economics: a survey on overconfidence in healthcare providers
DISCUSSION: We could show the presence of overconfidence in health economics, which is consistent with studies in healthcare and the economy. The subjective perception of some medical educators, being role models to students and having a superior 'attitude' (eg, morality) concerning the economy may foster prejudice against economists as students might believe them. It also may aggravate moral distress and disrupts interactions between healthcare providers managers and leaders. Considering the study's limitations, lifelong interprofessional and reflective training and train-the-trainer programmes may be mandatory to address...

Cost-effectiveness of methenamine hippurate compared with antibiotic prophylaxis for the management of recurrent urinary tract infections in secondary care: a multicentre, open-label, randomised, non-inferiority trial
Conclusions On average, methenamine hippurate was less costly and more effective than antibiotic prophylaxis but these results are subject to uncertainty. Methenamine hippurate is more likely to be considered cost-effective when the benefits of reduced antibiotic use were included in the analysis. Trial registration number ISRCTN70219762. Lifetime costs of alcohol consumption in Thailand: protocol for an incidence-based cost-of-illness study using Markov model
Introduction Several prevalence-based cost-of-illness (COI) studies have been conducted to estimate the economic burden of alcohol consumption borne by a particular society in a given year. Yet there are few studies examining the economic costs incurred by an individual drinker over his/her lifetime. Thus, this study aims to estimate the costs incurred by an individual drinker’s alcohol consumption over his or her lifetime in Thailand. Methods and analysis An incidence-based COI approach will be employed. To project individuals’ associated costs over a lifetime, a Markov modelling technique will be used. The f...

Evolving Evidence-Based Value Assessment of One-Time Therapies: Tisagenlecleucel as a Case Study
Conclusions and RelevanceProjections at launch of the likely cost effectiveness of tisagenlecleucel appear to have underestimated its ultimate economic value given more recent trial and real-world data. To balance uncertainty in initial valuation with the need to provide access to novel oncology therapies, payers can consider flexible reimbursement policies alongside ongoing assessments as new data emerge. Does the introduction of an infliximab biosimilar always result in savings for hospitals? A descriptive study using real-world data
ConclusionsThe introduction of CT-P13 and the disruption of patient treatment management were not associated with differences in average outpatient and inpatient costs and length of stay, in contrast to the results reported in the rest of the literature. Future research should focus on the cost-effectiveness of non-medical switching policies and the potential benefits for patients. (Source: Health Economics Review)

Trade-offs between overall survival and side effects in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer: eliciting preferences of patients with primary and metastatic breast cancer using a discrete choice experiment
Conclusions Patients are willing to forgo overall survival to avoid particular severity levels of side effects. Our results have implications for data collected in research studies and can help inform person-centred care and shared decision-making. (Source: BMJ Open)
