[Comment] New evidence of the tuberculosis burden in Asia demands national action
Tuberculosis disease prevalence surveys are showing that the burden of tuberculosis is even more severe in Asia than previously recognised, particularly in the 11 countries that comprise the WHO South-East Asia Region (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People ’s Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste). Indeed, the new data in WHO’s Global Tuberculosis Report 20161 show that tuberculosis rates in several Asian countries are higher than those seen elsewhere, apart from in nations with severe tuberculosis–HIV co-epidemics. Water, sanitation and hygiene related risk factors for soil-transmitted helminth and Giardia duodenalis infections in rural communities in Timor-Leste.
This study describes the epidemiology, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and socioeconomic risk factors of STH and intestinal protozoa among communities in Manufahi District, Timor-Leste. As part of a cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT), a baseline cross-sectional survey was conducted across 18 villages, with data from six additional villages. Stool samples were assessed for STH and protozoal infections using quantitative PCR (qPCR) and questionnaires administered to collect WASH and socioeconomic data. Risk factors for infection were assessed using multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression, stratified by a...

Current Cigarette Smoking, Access, and Purchases from Retail Outlets Among Students Aged 13-15 Years - Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 45 Countries, 2013 and 2014.
Abstract Tobacco use is a leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality, with nearly 6 million deaths caused by tobacco use worldwide every year (1). Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use in most countries, and the majority of adult smokers initiate smoking before age 18 years (2,3). Limiting access to cigarettes among youths is an effective strategy to curb the tobacco epidemic by preventing smoking initiation and reducing the number of new smokers (3,4). CDC used the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data from 45 countries to examine the prevalence of current cigarette smoking,...

The role of grief symptoms and a sense of injustice in the pathways to post-traumatic stress symptoms in post-conflict Timor-Leste.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support an expanded model of PTSD symptoms relevant to post-conflict populations, in which grief symptoms and a sense of injustice play pivotal roles. The model supports the importance of a focus on loss, grief and a sense of injustice in conducting trauma-focused psychotherapies for PTSD amongst populations exposed to mass conflict and violence. Further research is needed to identify the precise mechanisms whereby grief symptoms and the sense of injustice impact on PTSD symptoms. Expectations and promises in the quest for truth: Examining victims ’ perceptions of truth commission participation in Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste.
This article argues that victims can be further disempowered and marginalized when they do not receive a substantive benefit following their c ontribution to a truth commission. The grievances that can result in this way not only threaten the legitimacy of the truth commission and by extension the transitional state, but also the preservation of lasting peace.
