Use of Medicines and Adherence to Standard Treatment Guidelines in Rural Community Health Centers, Timor-Leste
The use of medicines and nurses’/midwives’ adherence to standard treatment guidelines (STGs) were examined in Timor-Leste during the early stage of the nation’s new health system development. A cross-sectional study was conducted as the quantitative element of mixed methods research. Retrospective samples from patient registration books and prospective observations were obtained in 20 randomly selected rural community health centers. The medicines use indicators, in particular the level of injection use, in Timor-Leste did not suggest overprescription. Prescribers with clinical nurse training prescribed s...

Challenges to delivery of isoniazid preventive therapy in a cohort of children exposed to tuberculosis in Timor‐Leste
Conclusionsputum smear‐positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases frequently result in household exposure of children <5 years in Timor‐Leste and provision of IPT is suboptimal. Contacts are located in diverse and distant locations. Further studies to delineate access barriers to IPT and review programmatic models that will facilitate IPT scale up in Timor‐Leste are needed. This article is protected by copyright. Measuring Women’s Empowerment at Household Level Using DHS Data of Four Southeast Asian Countries
In this study, a measurement of women’s empowerment is developed using principal axis factoring with micro data from the Demographic and Health Surveys on four Southeast Asia countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and Timor-Leste. The results has consistently found three factors including women’s labor force participation, women’s education and women’s household decision-making that affect individual women’s empowerment. Nevertheless, despite the literature suggested by other studies, very little evidence was found to support family planning use as one of the components of women’s empowerment in t...

A generic rabies risk assessment tool to support surveillance
Publication date: Available online 12 November 2014 Source:Preventive Veterinary Medicine Author(s): Michael P. Ward , Marta Hernández-Jover The continued spread of rabies in Indonesia poses a risk to human and animal populations in the remaining free islands, as well as the neighbouring rabies-free countries of Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and Australia. Here we describe the development of a generic risk assessment tool which can be used to rapidly determine the vulnerability of rabies-free islands, so that scarce resources can be targeted to surveillance activities and the sensitivity of surveillance systems incr...

Domestic Violence, Marital Control, and Family Planning, Maternal, and Birth Outcomes in Timor-Leste
Abstract Patriarchal traditions and a history of armed conflict in Timor-Leste provide a context that facilitates violence against women. More than a third of ever-married Timorese women report physical and/or sexual domestic violence (DV) perpetrated by their most recent partner. DV violates women’s rights and may threaten their reproductive health. Marital control may also limit women’s reproductive control and healthcare access. Our study investigated relationships between DV and marital control and subsequent family planning, maternal healthcare, and birth outcomes in Timor-Leste. Using log...

The role of international NGOs in health systems strengthening: the case of Timor-Leste.
Authors: Mercer MA, Thompson SM, de Araujo RM Abstract Achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals for health will require that programs supporting health in developing countries focus on strengthening national health care systems. However, the dominant neoliberal model of development mandates reduced public spending on health and other social services, often resulting in increased funding for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) at the expense of support for government systems. East Timor, later Timor-Leste, is an example of a post-crisis country where international NGO efforts were initiall...
