The four cases include Indonesia (in which hundreds of thousands died in anti-Communist violence), Cambodia (in which the Khmer Rouge killed more than one million civilians), East Timor (in which more than one hundred thousand civilians died during the Indonesian occupation), and Myanmar (in which the state/army is accused of genocide toward the Rohing...

National cross-sectional cluster survey of tuberculosis prevalence in Timor-Leste: a study protocol
This study aims to provide an estimate of the prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB in Timor-Leste and provide additional insights into diagnostic coverage and health-seeking behaviour of persons with symptoms suggestive of TB. Methods and analysis A national population-based cross-sectional cluster survey will be conducted in which participants aged 15 years and older will be screened for pulmonary TB using an algorithm consisting of symptom screening and digital X-ray of the chest with computer-aided detection software for X-ray interpretation. Xpert Ultra and liquid culture methods will be used to conf...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 263: Stability of Genotube & reg; Swabs for African Swine Fever Virus Detection Using Loop-Mediated Isothermal (LAMP) Laboratory Testing on Samples Stored without Refrigeration
This study used Genotube® swabs stored in temperate and tropical climates without refrigeration for four weeks after collection to demonstrate there was no change in test performance and results using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) ASFV detection on a series of pig serum samples including serum spiked with a synthetic ASFV positive control, naturally acquired ASFV positive serum from Timor-Leste and negative ASFV serum samples. The use of Genotube® swabs for ASFV detection for surveillance purposes, coupled with testing platforms such as LAMP, can provide an alternative to traditional...

Compulsory treatment in Portuguese-speaking countries: An analysis and comparison of the legal framework
CONCLUSIONS: The significant disparities in compulsory treatment policies among Portuguese-speaking countries, with only Brazil, Cape Verde, and Portugal having specific legislation, underscore the need for a collective effort to establish more consistent procedures and safeguard individual rights.PMID:38181487 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijlp.2023.101950 (Source: International Journal of Law and Psychiatry)

Cardiovascular diseases burden attributable to ambient PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > pollution from 1990 to 2019: A systematic analysis for the global burden of disease study (2019)
CONCLUSIONS: The global CVDs burden attributable to APMP2.5 has contributed to the heterogeneity of spatial and temporal distribution. APMP2.5-related CVDs deaths have largely shifted from higher SDI regions to those with a lower SDI. Globally, APMP2.5-attributable CVDs pose a significant threat to public health and diseases burden has increased over time, particularly in male, old-aged populations. The governments and health systems should take measures to reduce air pollution to impede this rising trend.PMID:37984788 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2023.117678 (Source: Environmental Research)

Cytochrome P450 2D6 profiles and anti-relapse efficacy of tafenoquine against < em > Plasmodium vivax < /em > in Australian Defence Force personnel
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2023 Nov 16:e0101423. doi: 10.1128/aac.01014-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlasmodium vivax infections and relapses remain a major health problem for malaria-endemic countries, deployed military personnel, and travelers. Presumptive anti-relapse therapy and radical cure using the 8-aminoquinoline drugs primaquine and tafenoquine are necessary to prevent relapses. Although it has been demonstrated that the efficacy of primaquine is associated with Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) activity, there is insufficient data on the role of CYP2D6 in the anti-relapse efficacy of tafenoquine. We investigat...

Global and national burden of atherosclerosis from 1990 to 2019: trend analysis based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
CONCLUSIONS: From 1990 to 2019, there was an overall increasing trend in the global incidence of all three clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis. Between 1990 and 2019, both the mortality rate and DALYs for IHD and ischemic stroke declined across all age groups. Overall, the burden of atherosclerosis-related diseases has not significantly decreased and even shows signs of trending upward. These findings strongly suggest that despite some progress made, efforts to control atherosclerosis diseases globally need to be intensified.PMID:37677929 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002839 (Source: Atherosclerosis)
