Origanum vulgare ethanolic extracts as a promising source of compounds with antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, and anti-virulence activity against dental plaque bacteria
Dental caries and periodontal diseases remain a challenge for oral health, especially given the lack of effective and safe treatment options that are currently available. Against the backdrop of an ongoing antimicrobial resistance crisis, a renewed interest in traditional medicinal plants as a potential source of new bioactive compounds has surfaced. In this context, we systematically screened the antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activities of both ethanolic and aqueous extracts of nine Algerian medicinal plants (Artemisia herba alba, Centaurium erythraea, Juglans regia, Laurus nobilis, Matricaria recutita, Mentha pulegium, ...

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics with different functional groups on the accumulation and toxicity of Pb on dandelion
Chemosphere. 2022 Oct 18:136874. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2022.136874. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicro (Nano)plastics are ubiquitous in the environment and can potentially affect the toxic effects of other chemicals, such as heavy metals. Although the interaction of micro (nano)plastics and heavy metals as well as their effects on aquatic organisms have been widely investigated, studies on their influence on terrestrial plants are limited. Therefore, in this study, the effects of polystyrene (PS), carboxy-modified PS (CPS) and amino-modified PS (APS) nanoparticles on the accumulation and toxicity of Pb on dandelion (...

Determination of major, minor and trace elements in Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) used as medicine in Azad Jammu and Kashmir by using PIXE technique
AbstractMedicinal plants have been identified for biological functions due to the presence of various minerals and metals in them. A study was conducted to determine selected elements in a medicinal plant dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) from selected sites of AJK (Azad Jammu and Kashmir) by using PIXE (particle induces x-ray emission) technique. The elements detected were Al, Ca, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, S, and Zn whose concentrations respectively ranged as 4.9 –33, 672–1995.6, 23–163, 0.03–1.55, 0.42–4.10, 18–75, 516–1893, 11–34.35, 3.30–11.00, 23.5–70 mg/kg. Toxic elements were not detected in studied...

Screening of medicinal plants from El Salvador for anti-viral activity against Herpes simplex 1
Nat Prod Res. 2022 Oct 14:1-5. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2022.2131783. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex virus 1 is one of the most prevalent pathogens worldwide. Resistant strains to current anti-viral treatment have been reported, requiring the search for novel anti-virals. Using a qPCR method to assess anti-herpetic activity from natural products, we analyzed 72 plant extracts from El Salvador and identified eighteen methanolic extracts with anti-viral activity of ≥ 75%. Anti-herpetic activity has not been previously reported in fourteen of the plants (Euphorbia lancifolia, Piper tuberculatum, Cordia alliodora,...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 6477: Chemical Composition, Antioxidant and Antiproliferative Activities of Taraxacum officinale Essential Oil
dellah Ech-Chahad Taraxacum officinale (TO) has been historically used for medicinal purposes due to its biological activity against specific disorders. To investigate the antioxidant and the antiproliferativepotential of TO essential oil in vitro and in vivo, the chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS. The in vivo antioxidant capacity was assessed on liver and kidney homogenate samples from mice subjected to acetaminophen-induced oxidative stress and treated with TO essential oil (600 and 12,000 mg/kg BW) for 14 days. The in vitro scavenging activity was assayed using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl...
