Significant release of unintentionally produced non-Aroclor polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners PCB 47, PCB 51 and PCB 68 from a silicone rubber production site in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Chemosphere. 2021 Jul 5;285:131449. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2021.131449. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSilicone rubber production using bis(2,4)-dichlorobenzoylperoxide (2,4-DCBP) as cross-linking agent was recently found to emit significant amounts of the non-Aroclor PCB congeners PCB 47, PCB 51 and PCB 68 into ambient air. Emissions were reported initially to be associated with flue gas condensate flakes deposited in the direct vicinity of the production site. These flakes were mainly composed of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid and were contaminated with PCBs in the range of 150-300 mg/kg. Analysis of ambient air proved that...

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2021 Jul;71(7). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.004920.ABSTRACTIn the present study, four bacterial strains, two (S-713T and 406) isolated from faecal samples of Tibetan antelopes and the other two (S-531T and 1598) from leaves of dandelion collected on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of PR China, were analysed using a polyphasic approach. All four isolates were aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, oxidase-negative, Gram-stain-positive and catalase-positive. According to four phylogenetic trees, strain pairs S-713T/406 and S-531T/1598 form two independent branches belonging to the genus Nocardioides, and are closest ...

Morphology control of laser-induced dandelion-like crystals of sodium acetate through the addition of acidic polymers
Crystal growth speeds, crystal sizes and the morphology of sodium acetate (CH3COONa) crystals in the presence of polymaleic acid and polyacrylic acid with different concentrations were investigated in supersaturated solutions of sodium acetate. The technique of non-photochemical laser-induced nucleation (NPLIN) was used to produce initial crystallites of anhydrous CH3COONa. The anhydrous CH3COONa crystal growth in solution after laser irradiation resembled the formation of dandelion seed heads. Even though NPLIN could offer temporal – spatial control of crystal nucleation without the addition of acidic polymers, the crys...

Bioinspired dandelion-like silica nanoparticles modified with L-glutathione for highly efficient enrichment of N-glycopeptides in biological samples
Anal Chim Acta. 2021 Aug 15;1173:338694. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2021.338694. Epub 2021 May 27.ABSTRACTThe pretreatment of complicated biological samples to eliminate the interference of nonglycopeptides and improve the efficiency of glycopeptides detection is crucial in glycoproteomics research. Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) has been adopted for enrichment of glycosylated peptides following identification with mass spectrometry, but it is still urgent to develop novel hydrophilic materials to save cost and improve enrichment efficiency. Scientists are pursuing to fabricate freestanding intelligent artificial m...
