Amplify Inspiration
On a group call for the Amplify course last week, we did a two-part co-creative exercise. The first part involved connecting with our sorrow, and the second part was to see the invitation in that sorrow to discover a new place of joy. Then members co-created intentions for the world with the purpose of sharing those intentions publicly – with the hope that we may collectively inspire more positive ripples in the world. I promised to share on my blog the intentions that people wanted to put out into the world. Every group was free to decide what medium to use to express their intentions, as long as it was something we ...

The Predatory Journals: The Dandelion of Biomedical Research
For years I have complained about predatory publishers found in PubMed. The publishers entry point is through PMC. Articles submitted to PMC are searchable and findable using the PubMed interface DESPITE being from a journal that is NOT indexed in MEDLINE. Librarians and very savvy researchers might know the distinction, but the vast majority of the people using PubMed do not know or care. If it is found in PubMed then it they believe it has passed some sort of litmus test. Librarians, ask yourself, how many times have you done a long complicated search in PubMed and then looked at the journals to try and weed out pred...

How Creating Balance in Your Gut Can Help Alleviate Anxiety
Most of us are pretty familiar with how anxiety feels in our body. When you have anxious thoughts, your body responds with a tightening in the stomach, nausea, gas, heartburn, and indigestion. The connection between your brain and your gastrointestinal tract goes the other way as well. If your digestive system is disrupted, it can send signals to your brain that may cause you to become anxious. This bidirectional connection is called the gut-brain axis. We are still learning a lot about the digestive system’s effect on the body and the mind, but what is coming to light through scientific research is that your gut is tru...

The second ivy league
Yesterday, I had my birding lens (150-600mm zoom) on the camera when I snapped those invertebrates feeding on the ivy overgrowth in All Saints’ churchyard in Rampton. Today, I took a 90mm macro to get a different type of closeup of the butterflies, bees, flies, and hornets. No hornets in sight and no ivy bees either. When Your Anxiety Doesn ’ t Have a Trigger
It’s very common for Kristin Bianchi’s clients to tell her that they’re feeling anxious, but they’re not sure why. They say they recently haven’t experienced anything particularly stressful or anxiety provoking, so it doesn’t make much sense. Consequently, “they frequently become worried about the meaning behind these seemingly random feelings of anxiety,” said Bianchi, a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in treating OCD, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and depression at the Center for Anxiety & Behavioral Change in Rockville, M.d. In other words, she noted, “they become worried about worryi...

Orange Swift – Triodia sylvina
Orange Swift (Triodia sylvina) – A first for the garden 13th August 2018 in three weeks or so of moth-ing with Rob’s homemade actinic Robinson trap. Given how brightly coloured this specimen is compared to other photos on UKMoths, for instance, I am assuming it is a male. The males are also smaller than the females, such sexual dimorphism does not seem to be a common trait in the moth world. The species is a member of the Hepialidae of which there are, it seems, only five members in the UK: Orange Swift (Triodia sylvina), Common Swift (Korscheltellus lupulina), Map-winged Swift (Korscheltellus fusconebulosa), ...

Orange tip butterfly (Anthocharis cardamines)
Orange tip butterflies (Anthocharis cardamines) flutter by so quickly it’s hard to get a good snap of them in flight, but now that the dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) have bloomed occasionally they come into land to refuel and sit there long enough to photograph. There were a few out and about when I was walking the dog earlier today and this one settled with his proboscis out to suck up the nectar. More nature photos in my 500px gallery. This particular photo shot with a 6D and a Sigma 150-600mm lens at full length, 1/1600s, f/6.3, ISO 500 in full sunshine and auto white balance. Photo levels nudged a little with...

9 Ways to Promote Gratitude in Your Life
Gratitude is good for us every way you look at it. According to Sonja Lyubomirsky, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California in Riverside, it boosts our happiness levels in a number of ways: by promoting the savoring of positive life experiences, by bolstering self-worth and self-esteem and thereby helping to cope with stress and trauma, by building social bonds and encouraging moral behavior, and by diminishing negative emotions and helping us adjust to new situations. Gratitude has a number of health benefits as well. “Research suggests that individuals who are grateful in their daily lives actually ...

Some children are extra sensitive to parenting style, bad and good
By Christian Jarrett Just over ten years ago, a fascinating journal article argued that some children are like orchids – they don’t just wither in response to a harsh upbringing, they also flourish in a positive environment, unlike their “dandelion” peers who are less affected either way. Since then, research into this concept has exploded. A new meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin usefully gathers all that we know so far about one key aspect of this – the associations between children’s temperament (the forerunner to adult personality) and the way they respond to different parenting ...
