What Causes Lymphocytosis?
Discussion Lymphocytes are an important part of the cellular and humoral immunity. Absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) is usually used to determine ranges of normal for lymphocytes. The ALC is higher in neonates and young children (up to 8000 cells/microL) but in those > 12 years of age is normally > 4000 cells/microL. Lymphopenia is usually defined as < 1000-1500 cells/microL. Infants again usually have higher counts or < 2500 cells/microL. Remember normal leukocyte count is 4.5-11.0 x 1000/mm2 with about 22-44% overall being lymphocytes. Reactive lymphocytosis is when a patient without an underlying hematological problem ha...

Progression Of Glioblastoma May Be Accelerated By Cytomegalovirus
A virus that infects most Americans but that usually remains dormant in the body might speed the progression of an aggressive form of brain cancer when particular genes are shut off in tumor cells, new research shows. The animal study by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC - James) and at Dana Farber Cancer Institute suggests that cytomegalovirus (CMV) might significantly accelerate the development and progression of glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer... Cytomegalovirus might speed brain-cancer growth
This study indicates that, in mice, a mouse CMV speeds the progression of an aggressive form of brain cancer when particular genes are shut off in tumor cells. The findings suggest that viruses might influence cancer progression, and that anti-viral therapy might improve the treatment of these aggressive brain tumors. OHSU research highlights promising strategy to help vaccines outsmart HIV
(Oregon Health & Science University) A new discovery at Oregon Health and Science University highlights an ingenious method to ensure the body effectively reacts when infected with the highly-evasive HIV virus that causes AIDS. The method involves the use of cytomegalovirus as a vector to help a vaccine better instruct T cells how to identify and fight the virus. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

Making Headway In Developing A Vaccine For The Leading Infectious Cause Of Congenital Birth Defects
A virus that most people have probably never heard of, yet most of us carry, is the number one infectious cause of congenital birth defects. One in 750 children are born with, or develop, permanent disabilities such as hearing loss or brain damage as a result of CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection in the womb. Major research efforts are underway to combat this invidious disease. Researchers from Cardiff University and the La Jolla Institute, California, have discovered a previously unknown cellular mechanism that could prove critical in creating a CMV vaccine... Cytomegalovirus And Genes Involved In Causation Of Schizophrenia
For the first time, an international team of researchers has found that a combination of a particular virus in the mother and a specific gene variant in the child increases the risk of the child developing schizophrenia Viruses and genes interact in a way that may increase the risk of developing schizophrenia significantly. This happens already in the developing foetus. An international team of scientists led by Aarhus University, Denmark, has made this discovery... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)
