Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1588: tRNA-Derived Fragments as Biomarkers in Bladder Cancer
gen Arum Bladder cancer (BC) diagnosis is reliant on cystoscopy, an invasive procedure associated with urinary tract infections. This has sparked interest in identifying noninvasive biomarkers in body fluids such as blood and urine. A source of biomarkers in these biofluids are extracellular vesicles (EVs), nanosized vesicles that contain a wide array of molecular cargo, including small noncoding RNA such as transfer RNA-derived fragments (tRF) and microRNA. Here, we performed small-RNA next-generation sequencing from EVs from urine and serum, as well as from serum supernatant. RNA was extracted from 15 non-cancer pati...

Metastasis to the bladder from primary breast cancer: A case report and literature review
Oncol Lett. 2024 Apr 5;27(6):249. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14382. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTBreast cancer is the most prevalent malignant tumor affecting women and represents the leading cause of female cancer-related mortality worldwide. Although distant organ metastasis accounts for the majority of breast cancer-related deaths, reports on bladder metastasis are limited in the existing literature. The present study describes the case of a patient with bladder metastasis originating from breast cancer. In addition, the present study also provides a review of 54 cases of similar disease that have been documented in the curre...

Editorial Comment on “Institutional Micro-Cost Comparative Analysis of Reusable vs. Single-Use Cystoscopes with assessment of environmental footprint”
Since the introduction of disposable urologic endoscopes, there has been growing interest and controversy. Single-use endoscopes can offer improved visualization with comparable performance to reusable scopes but often with high cost per device and ill-defined environmental impacts that deter surgeons, administrators and trainees. Earlier studies have focused on average cost per case, evaluating direct capital costs and indirect reprocessing costs without also accounting for the lifespan of reusable or single-use scopes. Pilot study to assess the feasibility of self-administered, low-dose methoxyflurane for cystoscopic procedures
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings in this pilot study provide proof of principle for the design of a randomized control trial to evaluate MEOF as an anesthetic in an outpatient cystoscopic procedural setting. As more urologic procedures are being performed in an outpatient setting, this may offer significant clinical benefit.PMID:38587974 | DOI:10.5489/cuaj.8676 (Source: Canadian Urological Association Journal)

Changes in the Urinary Microbiome After Transurethral Resection of Non-muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: Insights from a Prospective Observational Study
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with low-grade NMIBC, the urine microbiome undergoes changes over time after removal of the tumor. The microbiome detected in tumor tissues is more phylogenetically diverse than in paired urine samples collected at TURBT. The interplay between bladder microbiome, tumor microbiome, and their alterations requires further studies to elucidate their predictive value and perhaps therapeutic implications.PMID:38570378 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15198-9 (Source: Ann Oncol)
