Screening for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea in Youth Correctional Facilities, Utah, USA
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Apr;30(13):S62-S67. doi: 10.3201/eid3013.230712.ABSTRACTWe reviewed data obtained in October 2021-May 2023 from youth who reported a history of sexual activity upon admission to 1 of 12 juvenile justice facilities in Utah, USA, that offered screening for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Urinalysis revealed C. trachomatis positivity of 10.77%, N. gonorrhoeae positivity of 1.08%, and coinfection C. trachomatis N. gonorrhoeae) of 0.90%. Prevalence of infection was similar for youths in rural and urban facilities. A total of 12.01% of those identifying as male and 14.01% of those identify...

< em > Chlamydia muridarum < /em > Associated Pulmonary and Urogenital Disease and Pathology in a Colony of Enzootically Infected Il12rb2 Deficient and Stat1 Knockout Mice
Comp Med. 2024 Apr 1. doi: 10.30802/AALAS-CM-24-000002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChlamydia muridarum (Cm), an intracellular bacterium of historical importance, was recently rediscovered as moderately prevalent in research mouse colonies. Cm was first reported as a causative agent of severe pneumonia in mice about 80 y ago, and while it has been used experimentally to model Chlamydia trachomatis infection of humans, there have been no further reports of clinical disease associated with natural infection. We observed clinical disease and pathology in 2 genetically engineered mouse (GEM) strains, Il12rb2KO and STAT1KO, w...

114. Rates of reinfection for Chlamydia trachomatis in adolescents and young adults: an assessment following the CDC STI Treatment Guidelines in 2021
In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revised the treatment recommendation for chlamydia trachomatis from single dose azithromycin to a 7-day course of doxycycline. Given the high risk of chlamydia infection in adolescents and young adults (AYA), this study evaluated reinfection rates before and after the change in CDC treatment guidelines. 39. Do adolescents with disabilities have lower rates of STI screening than non-disabled peers?
It is well established that individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities are at increased risk of sexual abuse and experience a higher prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) compared to individuals without disabilities. Despite this, there is a paucity of data on whether these groups are screened for STIs at the same rate. The aim of this study was to determine whether adolescents and young adults (YA) with disabilities undergo routine screening for gonorrhea and chlamydia at lower rates compared to individuals without disabilities. Questioning risk compensation: pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men, capital region of Denmark, 2019 to 2022
ConclusionWe found a 35% increase in STI incidence associated with PrEP use. It started before PrEP initiation, challenging the assumption that PrEP leads to risk compensation. Instead, the data suggest that individuals seek PrEP during periods of heightened sexual risk-taking. Consequently, PrEP programmes should include sexual health consultations, STI testing, treatment and prevention strategies to prevent HIV and improve sexual health.PMID:38551099 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2024.29.13.2300451 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Diverse animal models for Chlamydia infections: unraveling pathogenesis through the genital and gastrointestinal tracts
Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for infections in various mucosal tissues, including the eyes, urogenital, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts. Chronic infections can result in severe consequences such as blindness, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. The underlying mechanisms leading to these diseases involve sustained inflammatory responses, yet thorough comprehension of the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. Chlamydial biologists employ in multiple methods, integrating biochemistry, cell biology, and genetic tools to identify bacterial factors crucial for host cell interactions. While numerous animal model...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1519: 4-Chloroisocoumarins as Chlamydial Protease Inhibitors and Anti-Chlamydial Agents
Rawling 4-Chloroisocoumarin compounds have broad inhibitory properties against serine proteases. Here, we show that selected 3-alkoxy-4-chloroisocoumarins preferentially inhibit the activity of the conserved serine protease High-temperature requirement A of Chlamydia trachomatis. The synthesis of a new series of isocoumarin-based scaffolds has been developed, and their anti-chlamydial properties were investigated. The structure of the alkoxy substituent was found to influence the potency of the compounds against High-temperature requirement A, and modifications to the C-7 position of the 3-alkoxy-4-chloroisocoumarin st...

Impact of Genital Infections and Antibiotic Use on Incidence of Preterm Birth: A Retrospective Observational Study
This study investigates the complex interplay among genital infections, antibiotic usage, and preterm birth. This study aims to identify common genital pathogens associated with preterm births, assess the impact of various antibiotic treatments on pregnancy outcomes, and understand antibiotic resistance patterns among these pathogens. This study included 71 pregnant women who experienced preterm birth and 94 women with genital infections who delivered at term. Various maternal characteristics, medical history, signs and symptoms, gestational weight, gestational age, type of birth, vaginal pH, Nugent scores, and vaginal flo...

Novel nucleotide-packaging vaccine delivers antigen and poly(I:C) to dendritic cells and generate a potent antibody response in vivo
Vaccine. 2024 Mar 26:S0264-410X(24)00364-5. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.058. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn issue with many current vaccines is the dependency on broadly inflammatory adjuvants, such as aluminum hydroxide or aluminum salts that affect many immune- and non-immune cells. These adjuvants are not necessarily activating all antigen-presenting cells (APCs) that take up the antigen and most likely they also activate APCs with no antigen uptake, as well as many non-immune cells. Conjugation of antigen and adjuvant would enable the use of smaller amounts of adjuvant and avoid unnecessary tissue damage and activ...
