Aging as a Disease: a Zoo Contains Animals, But is Not Itself an Animal
The author of today's open access commentary is quite prolifically opinionated on the topic of mTOR and its status as a central pillar of programmed aging, particularly the hyperfunction version of programmed aging theories. Nonetheless, he sometimes has interesting things to say, as is the case here on the topic of whether aging is a disease. A great deal of ink has been spilled of late on the question of whether or not aging is a disease. This is the case not because everyone suddenly developed an interest in semantics, but rather because it directly affects the regulation of medical development, and thus the flow of fun...

Immigrants Use Less Welfare Than Native ‐Born Americans
ConclusionThe average immigrant consumed 27.3 percent less welfare than native-born Americans in 2020. Further reform should reduce that substantially by building a higher wall around the welfare state instead of around the country. Still better would be reducing or eliminating the welfare state for all but reducing or eliminating non-citizen access is a politically feasible first step. In the long-run, there are good reasons to think that immigrants won ’t increase the size of the welfare state and compelling evidence that they would reduce support for it. Still, the net-fiscal effects are most important – watch this ...

Evidence Likewise Calls California ’s “Housing First” Homelessness Strategy into Question
Vanessa Brown Calder and Jordan GygiA recentCato blog examined the effects of Utah ’s “Housing First” policy, which aims to provide the chronically homeless with permanent housing without requiring treatment for mental health issues or substance use disorder. The Biden administration recently unveileda  new federal plan to address homelessness that rests on this philosophy, so the outcomes in Housing First states are worth considering. Unfortunately, in Utah, the original “Housing First” state, data indicates that chronic homelessness and overall homelessness have grown significantly two decades after policy imp...

Dramatically Improving Population Health Through Remote Patient Monitoring Data
The following is a guest article by Anish Sebastian, CEO and Co-Founder of Babyscripts. As winter storms sweep the country and complicate transportation, healthcare access becomes a front-and-center issue. Rural hospitals across the U.S. are shuttering their labor, delivery, and maternity wards, in many cases closing altogether. Pregnant women in remote rural areas are even more at risk this winter than previous years. Thirty-six percent of U.S. counties now fit the designation of “maternity care desert,” meaning they have no obstetric hospitals or birth centers and no obstetric providers. For hospitals that have manag...

Flexible Sensors Detect Heavy Metals in Sweat
Researchers at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, along with collaborators in Germany and Sweden, have developed a flexible sensor that can detect heavy metals in sweat, an easily obtainable bodily fluid. Heavy metals, such as lead or cadmium, can cause serious toxicity if they accumulate in the body, but detecting the concentration of such metals in biological samples requires expensive laboratory equipment and skilled staff. To address this, these researchers have created a flexible sensor that is easy to use and which can detect metals in sweat samples before transmitting the results to a smartphone. The technology...

Early evaluation of the Children and Young People ’s Mental Health Trailblazer programme: a rapid mixed-methods study
National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) - The Children and Young People ’s Mental Health Trailblazer programme is funding the creation of new mental health support teams (MHSTs) to work in schools and further education colleges. The “Antebellum Paradox”: What is it and why it matters.
BY MIKE MAGEE I recently made the case that “Health is foundational to a functioning democracy. But health must be shared and be broadly accessible to be an effective enabler of good government.” I also suggested that the pursuit of good health is implied and imbedded in the aspirational and idealistic wording of our U.S. Constitution, and that the active pursuit of health as a nation is essential if we wish to rise to Hamilton’s challenge in Federalist #1 and prove that we are “capable of establishing good government from reflection and choice.” So why are native white males lagging behind in health? ...

COVID-Bivalent Booster for Children: Should your child get one?
A recent study showed that there is a 43% increase in autoimmune diseases in the months following a COVID infection. And autoimmune diseases among kids were already on the rise. The question becomes how best to guard against COVID and the long tail of impact on children.  With some vaccines, it can be important for the whole community to take them because they help prevent transmission and help prevent the vulnerable among us from becoming infected. The COVID booster is a bit different than that. It decreases transmission little if any. It does boost antibodies for a period of time, it may make it a bit less likely that y...

School Choice and the Courts
Colleen HroncichAs Neal McCluskeyexplored yesterday, education involves “developing the minds —and for many, the souls— of human beings. ” This basic truth has resulted in education being a common battleground since the early days of state involvement. Not surprisingly, most of these battles have been around religion, which is a primary way morals and values are taught and upheld. Many early public schools were at least loosely Protestant —including prayer and Bible reading as part of the school day—precisely because a strong moral upbringing was considered so essential. This resulted in court cas...
