73 Be Proud of Yourself Quotes for a Self-Loving Perspective
It’s not always easy to be proud of yourself. For many of us, beating yourself up over bigger setbacks or small mistakes becomes a habit that feels more familiar and leaves little room for being kind towards oneself. I hope this post with 73 of the most powerful be proud of yourself quotes can help you to do the same. Rethinking Newer Events
BY KIM BELLARD It’s a lot more fun to write about exciting new technologies, or companies in other industries that healthcare could learn from, than to pick on healthcare for its many, well-known shortcomings, but there was an article in JAMA Forum last week that I had to note and perhaps expand on: A New Category of “Never Events” – Ending Harmful Hospital Policies, by  Dave A. Chokshi, MD, MSc and Adam L. Beckman, BS (he is also an MD/MBA student).   The concept of a “Never Event” is well known by this point.  Coined some twenty years ago by Ken Kizer, MD of the National Quality Form (NQF) and soon w...

Friday Feature: NaNoWriMo
Colleen HroncichMy oldest child wrote a novel when she was 13. It wasn ’t very long, but it had a plot, dialogue, character development, and a conclusion that hinted at a sequel. We still have several paperback copies of her book, which she received after participating inNaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month.NaNoWriMo, which takes place each November, challenges writers to draft an entire novel in just one month. While you can do outlining, character profiles, and other planning in advance, the actual writing should start November 1. For my daughter, like many other participants, the 30-day deadline really spurred ...

Shirley Svorny, RIP
Michael F. CannonIt saddens me to convey that Cato Institute adjunct scholar and my friendShirley Svorny passed away October 20 from multiple myeloma. What is a bidirectional Glenn procedure (BDG)? Cardiology Basics
Bidirectional Glenn procedure is done for children with some types of cyanotic congenital heart diseases.  The classical Glenn procedure is an end to end anastomosis of the superior vena cava to the right pulmonary artery so that the superior vena caval venous blood does not reach the left pulmonary artery. Bidirectional Glenn (BDG) procedure is an end to side anastomosis of superior vena cava to the right pulmonary artery. Main pulmonary artery is then divided and sutured. BDG helps flow into both pulmonary arteries. BDG is usually followed later by a Fontan repair. BDG is performed in patients with anatomical or fu...

A physician celebrates her growth
As a pediatrician, you’d think that I’d be a pro at celebrating growth. After all, I celebrate the growth of children in the office as they meet their developmental milestones and grow physically. I celebrate their academic and social growth. What I hadn’t celebrated: my own growth. I thought for years that I was beyond Read more… A physician celebrates her growth originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

What is Eisenmenger syndrome? Cardiology Basics
Eisenmenger syndrome is a late complication of congenital heart diseases with large left to right shunts. Fortunately, it is rare now-a-days because most conditions which can cause Eisenmenger syndrome later, are detected by neonatal screening and treated early so that this complication does not develop later. Eisenmenger syndrome is a condition in which long standing high pulmonary blood flow leads to irreversible pulmonary hypertension with reversal of shunt. Right to left shunt causes reduced systemic oxygen saturation with cyanosis. This is an echocardiogram showing a left to right shunt from the left ventricle to the...
