UH w/ Scholarship vs UTMB
Hi y'all I was wondering if you could share me your input on choosing between 2 med schools. I prematched to both UH, newer MD school in tx (they opened in 2020 and haven’t had a graduating class for me to see their match list) and UTMB. I was certain on going to UTMB, but UH just awarded me a full ride scholarship, and now I’m confused. I was wondering does the med school name/history matter for further sub-specialties after an internal med residency. I’m really intrigued by cardiology... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

"Don't pick IM just for the fellowships"...T/F?
Hi y'all, MS3 here trying to figure out what to do with my life. I've bounced between a few different ideas since coming into med school, and currently the prospect of going the IM -> Cardiology route has me in a stranglehold. I really enjoy cardiac phys and I am set to rotate with a cardiologist in a month for my elective. However, one thing I've heard is that you shouldn't pick IM solely for the prospect of one of the fellowship pathways, and to only pick it if you are fine with being... Cardiac Team models
Looking for examples of how other groups with dedicated heart teams take call and all the other logistics. Our hospital/CT surgeons are pushing us to create a dedicated heart team separate from the generalists. They want 4 first starts for the CT surgeons and 1 cath lab daily. One of the CT surgeons is new and will be ramping up a heart failure program with significant increases in numbers of ecmo and LVAD placement. How many anesthesiologists would you recommend? How should we split... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is there any point in taking the ABIM CV boards this year (2024)? What are fellowship programs recommending their senior fellows do?
I am wondering what the consensus is in the cardiology fellowship/academic cardiology world regarding the ABIM CV Board (and the debacle that happened in 2023) and the prospect of the new Cardiovascular Medicine Board. The latter is supported by every cardiology society under the sun. Should fellows wait out until the CVM board debuts (probably in 2025, if we are optimistic) or should they still sit for that BS ABIM exam? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I include a negative experience with healthcare as a motivation for med school?
My father passed away while I was in high school due to a massive heart attack. While in the ER the staff gave my mother and I a lot of unnecessary grief. Conversely, I have seen a lot of great things working in the ED and plan on paralleling the two. This situation really impacted my thoughts on medicine and is a large reason why I am a premed student. I dont want to put others down too much and maybe I should write about something a little more positive--I also I don't want to come across... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Prevention of Hand Dermatitis in Surgery/Procedural Specialties
I am not a surgeon. I am a rising interventional cardiology fellow. I have mild chronic atopic dermatitis, nowadays mostly confined to my hands. We mostly use alcohol-based solution (Sterillium) and non-latex gloves. I have noticed lately as I do more cases, I have started to develop some dermatitis on my hands. There isn't too much about this topic online, a limited thread from a while ago, and I suspect that this is a fairly common issue particularly given the harsher scrubs you guys use...
