The Covid-carrying Danish mink are a warning sign – but is anyone heeding it? | Matthew Baylis
Sars, Mers, now this: we must think hard about how we farm animals that are known hosts of human coronavirusesTwo decades ago, aseminal study from the University of Edinburgh compiled a list of all known human infectious diseases. It found a total of 1,415 different human pathogens, and claimed that 61% were capable of spreading between humans and animals. Today, with the world put on hold by adeadly disease that seems likely to have spread first from bats to humans, we know the dangerous effects of such pathogens all too well. The group of diseases that spread from animals to humans are collectively known as zoonoses. The ...

Significantly more Danes infected with campylobacter in 2019
(Technical University of Denmark) In 2019, the number of registered campylobacter infections increased by almost a fifth and studies show that many of the campylobacter outbreaks recorded that year were caused by chicken meat. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)

We Need to Rethink Our Food System to Prevent the Next Pandemic
Once a dangerous new pathogen is out, as we are seeing, it can be difficult if not impossible to prevent it going global. One as contagious as SARS-CoV-2 has the potential to infect the whole of humanity. Eighty per cent of cases may be benign, but with such a large pool of susceptible hosts, the numbers who experience severe illness and die can still be shockingly high. So the only sensible answer to the question, how do we stop this from happening again, is: by doing all we can to prevent such pathogens infecting humans in the first place. And that means taking a long, hard look at our relationship with the natural world...

Not-so-dirty birds? Not enough evidence to link wild birds to food-borne illness
(Washington State University) Despite the perception that wild birds in farm fields can cause food-borne illness, a WSU study has found little evidence linking birds to E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter outbreaks. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

European Union Summary Report on Antimicrobial Resistance in Zoonotic and Indicator Bacteria from Humans, Animals and Food in 2017/2018
Source: European Union, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Published: 1/31/2020. Salmonella and campylobacter are becoming increasingly resistant to ciprofloxacin, one of the antibiotics of choice for treating infections caused by these bacteria. That conclusion is part of this 166-page report on antimicrobial resistance in zoonoses, released with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which also presents some positive trends in the animal sector and includes key outcome indicators that will help European Union Member States assess their progress in reducing the use of antimicrobials and combat...

Puppies May Be Making People Sick, CDC says
(CNN) — Puppies: cute balls of fur. But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they’re also linked to a multi-state outbreak of an infection that’s resistant to multiple drugs. An outbreak strain of Campylobacter jejuni has been reported in 13 states and so far 30 people have been infected, the CDC said. Four have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported, the center said. “Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicate that puppies purchased from pet stores are the likely source of this outbreak. Many of the cases had contact with puppies or were employees at pet stor...

Don ’t Wash Raw Turkey Before Cooking on Thanksgiving, Food Experts Warn
(NEW YORK) — Go ahead and rinse your cranberries, potatoes and green beans. But food experts say don’t — repeat don’t — wash the turkey before popping it in the oven on Thanksgiving Day. They say that could spread the germs lurking on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it’s been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing off raw poultry. “If your mother did it and your grandmother did it, and suddenly the (government) says not to wash your turkey, you may take some time to adjust,” said Drusilla Banks, who teaches food sanitation for the University ...

Source: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Published: 11/22/2019. This 2016-2017 Integrated Summary is the first time the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) has included data on animal pathogens from a pilot study with the Food and Drug Administration's Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN). It is also the first time that NARMS has provided genomic information for Campylobacter and E. coli retail meat and food animal isolates. NARMS is a national public health surveillance system that monitors food-borne bacteria to determine if they are resistant to various ant...

On the trail of pathogens in meat, eggs and raw milk
(BfR Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) To make food even safer for humans, experts from scientific institutions, food regulatory authorities and the business community will discuss current developments and strategies at the 'Zoonoses and Food Safety' Symposium at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) on 4 and 5 November 2019, in Berlin-Marienfelde. The Association between Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Periodontal Conditions: Is There a Common Bacterial Etiology?
CONCLUSION:A number of studies have showed an association between PD and IBD. Both diseases share genetic and environmental etiological factors. The precise role of intestinal bacteria remains vague. The periodontal microbiota that might be involved in the association of these diseases are Fusobacterium nucleatum, Campylobacter rectus and Campylobacter concisus. Fungal and viral microbiota dysbiosis should also be evaluated as common pathogenic pathways in IBD and periodontal disease. (Source: Dental Technology Blog)
