Pet Store Puppies Are Linked to Drug-Resistant Infections In People
Puppies are cute. But in rare cases, contact with them is putting people at risk of a multidrug-resistant bacterial infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns in a new report. Between January 2016 and February 2018, the CDC identified 118 people, including 29 pet store employees, from 18 states who developed infections from Campylobacter jejuni bacteria apparently related to puppies, the report says. While the outbreak investigation is over, “the risk for multidrug-resistant Campylobacter transmission to employees and consumers continues,” the CDC says. Bacteria from the Campylobacte...

Campylobacter -- the germ on chicken eggs
(BfR Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) Eggs are a popular food. In fact, Germans consumed almost 20 billion of them in 2016, which equates to a per capita consumption of 235 eggs. It is therefore easy to understand why the detection of chemicals in eggs, such as the insecticide fipronil recently, caused quite a stir, not to say an outrage. What is largely unknown, though, is that the most common bacterial pathogen for food infections is also to be found on chicken eggs. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)

You Should Throw Away Your Germy Kitchen Sponge Immediately. Here ’s How to Wash Your Dishes Instead
Quick — what’s the germiest room in the house? You might be surprised to learn that it’s not the bathroom. Microscopic bugs and bacteria actually favor the kitchen, where you eat and prepare food. And the nexus of all that microbial activity could be sitting right next to the kitchen sink: on the sponge. In a 2017 study published in Scientific Reports, German researchers did a germ-analysis of kitchen sponges with some startling results. There were 362 different kinds of bacteria lurking in the crevice...

The diagnosis was made in England, but it appears that the infection came from an encounter in south-east Asia. Antibiotic resistance is a global problem, and can ’t be confined to any one part of the world for long. Last autumn a woman died in the US of an infection apparently picked up in an Indian hospita...
