The No-Vertical Scar Technique for Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction
Oncoplastic reconstruction can optimize breast conserving therapy. Nipple loss is a concern in patients with significant ptosis and breast hypertrophy particularly with pedicle undermining during tumor resection. The modified Robertson technique (No-Vertical Scar reduction) has been previously described for breast reduction in large, ptotic patients using a wide, bell-shaped inferior pedicle with only inframammary fold and peri-areolar incisions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the No-Vertical Scar (NVS) technique applied to oncoplastic reconstruction. (Source: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery)

Breast Resection Weight Prediction and Insurance Reimbursement in Reduction Mammaplasty: Which Scale Is Reliable?
Background: Many insurance companies in the United States rely on the Schnur sliding scale to predict resection weights to determine medical necessity for breast reduction surgery. Accurate methods to predict resection weights are needed to avoid insurance denials. The authors compared the accuracy of formulas such as the Schnur, Appel, Descamps, and Galveston scales in predicting resection weights, and assessed whether they influence insurance coverage decision. Methods: A retrospective review of bilateral reduction mammaplasty procedures from June of 2017 to June of 2019 was performed at the Mayo Clinic, Roche...

Effects of Comorbidities on the Inferior Pedicle Reduction Mammaplasty: A Statistical Analysis
Conclusions: Patients with increased body mass index are at greater risk for fat necrosis and wound healing complications. However, these usually can be managed conservatively in patients undergoing inferior pedicle breast reduction. Patients do not require free nipple grafting. The use of nicotine or the presence of diabetes or hypertension does not impact outcome. CLINICAL QUESTION/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Risk, III. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Topical Dimethyl Sulfoxide for Congested Nipple–areolar Complexes in Breast Surgery: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: This pilot study shows that DMSO may be an effective topical treatment for NAC congestion following breast surgery. Given its low cost, ease of application, and lack of side effects, future studies should prospectively compare DMSO against other topical treatments, like nitroglycerin ointment. Patient-reported Outcomes of Scar Impact: Comparing of Abdominoplasty, Breast Surgery, and Facial Surgery Patients
The objective of this study is to evaluate the scarring impact after facial surgery, breast surgery, and full abdominoplasty for symptoms, appearance, psychosocial health, career, and sexual well-being using validated patient-reported outcome measures. Method: A total of 901 patients from five providers completed the SCAR-Q (covering symptoms, appearance, and psychosocial) and Career/Sexual Well-being assessments via phone or email where a higher score indicated a more positive scar perception. Results: Of the 901 patients, 38.1% had abdominoplasty surgery, 38.1% breast reduction, 15.3% facial surgery, 4.7% b...

The effects of breast reduction on pulmonary functions: a systematic review
Breast reduction is one of the most commonly requested and performed plastic surgery procedures, and its psychological, aesthetic, and analgesic benefits are well known. Several studies dealing with the effects of reduction mammoplasty on the physiology of respiration have been published in the past decades. This systematic review aims to assess whether bilateral breast reduction is associated with measurable improvement in lung function in women with macromastia. This review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. (Source: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery)
