Morphological-metabolic analysis in Streptomyces rimosus microparticle-enhanced cultivations (MPEC)
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1007/s00449-024-03015-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStreptomyces produce a broad spectrum of biologically active molecules such as oxytetracycline and rimocidin, which are widely used in human and animal treatments. microparticle-enhanced cultivation (MPEC) is one of the tools used for Streptomyces bioprocesses intensification by the control of mycelial morphology. In the present work, morphological changes of Streptomyces rimosus caused by the addition of 10 µm talc microparticles in MPEC were correlated with the biosynthetic activity of the microorganism. Comparing the run...

Contribution of Red Blood Cells and Platelets to Blood Clot Computed Tomography Imaging and Compressive Mechanical Characteristics
The objective of the current study was to examine the individual and combined effects of blood clot RBC and platelet content on resultant CT imaging and mechanical characteristics. Human blood clot analogues were prepared from a combination of preselected RBC volumes and platelet concentrations to decouple their contributions. The resulting clot RBC content (%) and platelet content (%) were determined using Martius Scarlet Blue and CD42b staining, respectively. Non-contrast and contrast-enhanced CT (NCCT and CECT) scans were performed to measure the clot densities. CECT density increase was taken as a proxy for clinical pe...

Modified Titanium Surface with Nano Amorphous Calcium Phosphate@Chitosan Oligolactate as Ion Loading Platform with Multifunctional Properties for Potential Biomedical Application
This study investigates the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, mechanical properties, and Se-release mechanism of the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) was synthesized, and the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating was deposited on Ti substrates using in situ anaphoretic deposition. Physico-chemical characterization was used to analyze the surface of the coating (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). The distribution of Se within the coating was examined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Bioact...

Evaluation of Apparatus and Protocols to Measure Human Passive Neck Stiffness and Range of Motion
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03517-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnderstanding of human neck stiffness and range of motion (ROM) with minimal neck muscle activation ("passive") is important for clinical and bioengineering applications. The aim of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the reliability of methods for assessing passive-lying stiffness and ROM, in six head-neck rotation directions. Six participants completed two assessment sessions. To perform passive-lying tests, the participant's head and torso were strapped to a bending (flexion, extension, lateral bending) or a rotati...

Automatic segmentation of tumour and organs at risk in 3D MRI for cervical cancer radiation therapy with anatomical variations
AbstractCervical cancer is a common cancer in women globally, with treatment usually involving radiation therapy (RT). Accurate segmentation for the tumour site and organ-at-risks (OARs) could assist in the reduction of treatment side effects and improve treatment planning efficiency. Cervical cancer Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) segmentation is challenging due to a limited amount of training data available and large inter- and intra- patient shape variation for OARs. The proposed Masked-Net consists of a masked encoder within the 3D U-Net to account for the large shape variation within the dataset, with additional dila...

Online Optimization Under Randomly Corrupted Attacks
Existing algorithms in online optimization usually rely on trustful information, e.g., reliable knowledge of gradients, which makes them vulnerable to attacks. To take into account the security issue in online optimization, this paper investigates the effect of randomly corrupted attacks, which can corrupt gradient information arbitrarily. To conquer the randomly corrupted attack, an onLine muLtiple normaLized Gradient Descent (L3GD) algorithm is proposed. Under mild conditions, the algorithm is proven to achieve satisfactory expected dynamic regret, i.e, $\mathcal{O}(\min\{P_{T}^{*}+T^{\frac{3}{4}},S_{T}^{*}+\sqrt{T}+\sum...
