Case Report: A Series of Three Meningoencephalitis Cases Caused by Acanthamoeba spp. from Eastern India
We present three cases of Acanthamoeba meningoencephalitis in immunocompetent individuals from Eastern India. The first patient presented with fever and headache; the second with headache, visual disturbance, and squint; and the third presented in a drowsy state. The cases presented on March 3, 18, and 21, 2023 respectively. The first two patients had concomitant tubercular meningitis for which they received antitubercular therapy and steroid. Their cerebrospinal fluid showed slight lymphocytic pleocytosis and increased protein. The diagnosis was done by microscopy, culture, and polymerase chain reaction. They received a c...

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods for quantification of total and free antibiotic concentrations in serum and exudate from patients with post-sternotomy deep sternal wound infection receiving negative pressure wound therapy
CONCLUSION: This method can accurately quantify the total and free concentrations of 16 antibiotics. Comparison of concentration ratios between serum and exudates allows for monitoring individual antibiotics' penetration capacity in patients receiving NPWT.PMID:38185284 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117704 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Sorption of four antibiotics onto pristine biochar derived from macadamia nutshell
In this study, the sorption properties of ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim on biochar derived from macadamia nut shells were investigated. The raw biomass was pyrolyzed at 600 °C to create a highly porous material with a surface area of 392 m2/g. The produced biochar was found to be a valuable material for both environmental remediation and carbon sequestration due to its high carbon and oxygen content. The sorption properties of four antibiotics on the produced biochar were compared using Bayesian nonlinear regression based on second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model. The Bayesian estimati...

Genomic analysis of multidrug-resistant Delftia tsuruhatensis isolated from raw bovine milk
Delftia tsuruhatensis is a gram-negative, aerobic bacterium mostly known as an organic pollutant degrading and growth-promoting microorganism. However, it recently emerged as an opportunistic human pathogen. To date, the source of D. tsuruhatensis infection is not clear. The majority of studies of D. tsuruhatensis have focused on environmental or clinical strains, while investigations of D. tsuruhatensis strains isolated from food sources are limited. In the present study, we report the case of D. tsuruhatensis isolation from raw bovine milk. Classical bacteriology approaches, as well as next-generation sequencing and comp...

Antibiotic-Associated Acute Kidney Injury Among Older Adults: A Case-Crossover Study
ConclusionThe potential of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and fluoroquinolones to be associated with AKI raises the significant need for vigilant prescribing of these antibiotics in older adults. (Source: Clinical Drug Investigation)

Vibrio species: development of EUCAST susceptibility testing methods and MIC and zone diameter distributions on which to determine clinical breakpoints
ConclusionsWe demonstrated the validity of using standard BMD and EUCAST disc diffusion methodology for AST of fiveVibrio spp., and generated suitable data to allow EUCAST to determine clinical MIC and zone diameter breakpoints for five pathogenicVibrio spp., including both non-toxigenic and toxigenicV. cholerae. Prevalence of ventilator-associated events and antibiogram of bacterial isolates of ventilator-associated pneumonia in a tertiary care hospital of Uttarakhand
CONCLUSION: The most common cause of HAI is VAP. The purpose of this study is to determine the importance of starting suitable antibiotics early for prognosis and the difficulty of diagnosing VAP.PMID:38156309 | PMC:PMC10751612 | DOI:10.18502/ijm.v15i6.14137 (Source: Iranian Journal of Microbiology)

Detection of FOX-AmpC- β-lactamase gene and antibiogram of AmpC-beta-lactamase-producing pathogens isolated from chronic suppurative otitis media patients in Nigeria
CONCLUSION: The detection of AmpC β-lactamase-producing multidrug-resistant GNB pathogens harbouring FOX-AmpC-β-lactamase gene among patients with CSOM infections in our study is a serious public health problem which needs urgent intervention.PMID:38156308 | PMC:PMC10751608 | DOI:10.18502/ijm.v15i6.14139 (Source: Iranian Journal of Microbiology)
