Cardiovascular physical examination as a screening tool for congenital heart disease in newborns at a teaching hospital in Ghana
CONCLUSION: Cardiovascular physical examination at birth is an effective and inexpensive screening tool for detecting CHD in newborns, which can easily be utilised in low-resource settings.FUNDING: None declared.PMID:38504760 | PMC:PMC10846649 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v57i2.10 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection in a preterm infant with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and immunological abnormalities
We report a case of a preterm infant with congenital cytomegalovirus infection complicated with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and immunological abnormalities. Ultrasonography revealed pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, major aortopulmonary collateral artery, and thymic hypoplasia. His serum chemistry tests on admission revealed immunoglobulin G, A, and M levels of 1,547 mg/dL, 70 mg/dL, and 274 mg/dL, respectively. A surface antigen analysis of the peripheral lymphocytes using flow cytometry revealed the following: relatively low CD4-positive T-cell levels (18.1%; 1,767/μL), very high CD8-positive T-cell levels (58...

A pilot study for biliary atresia diagnosis: Fluorescent Imaging of Indocyanine Green in stool
Biliary atresia is the most common cause of obstructive jaundice in infants and conventional cholangiography is the current diagnostic gold standard. Fluorescent cholangiography with indocyanine green can enhance biliary tree visualization during surgery because it is exclusively excreted into the bile ducts and eventually into the intestine. Therefore, we hypothesized that indocyanine green presence in stool could confirm bile duct patency in infants. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Fertility potential and safety assessment of residual ovarian cortex in young women diagnosed with epithelial borderline and early-stage malignant ovarian tumors
CONCLUSIONS: Personalized counseling for fertility preservation is required in the event of BOTs and early-stage EOCs. Fertility-sparing surgery and adjuvant gamete preservation should be considered, balancing the oncological risks according to tumor stage and histotype and fertility potential, especially at a younger age.PMID:38492474 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygyno.2024.03.008 (Source: Gynecologic Oncology)

Thoracic musculoskeletal deformities following surgical treatment of esophageal atresia - thoracoscopic versus open approach: A retrospective two centers cohort study
Thoracic musculoskeletal deformities are significant complications following open correction of esophageal atresia (EA) during long-term follow-up. We aimed to compare the frequency and severity of thoracic musculoskeletal deformities after open and thoracoscopic repair of EA. We hypothesized that fewer deformities would occur following the less invasive thoracoscopic approach. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Characterization of microRNA exosome content from endometrioma wall in  vitro culture
Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory gynecological disorder characterized by endometrium-like tissue outside the uterine cavity, including the ovaries (1), causing severe chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Endometriomas are filled with dark brown endometrial fluid, produced by ectopic endometrial glands over time. This elicits a chronic inflammatory reaction from surrounding ovarian tissue, leading to formation of a fibrotic pseudocapsule (2). This pathological process is detrimental to the ovarian follicle pool, which undergoes massive atresia in response to different stimuli, such as free iron and reactive oxygen sp...

Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in twin ‐to‐twin transfusion syndrome undergoing laser surgery: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsRVOT occurs in about 6% of the recipient twins with TTTS, especially in stages III and IV and those with reversed ductus venosus a-wave. The findings from this systematic review support the need for a thorough cardiac assessment of pregnancies complicated by TTTS, both before and after laser, to maximize perinatal outcome, and the importance of early diagnosis of TTTS and timely management.
