The Anatomy Of A Good Digital Health Company
Transparent communication, clinically-validated technologies, addressing real-life clinical needs; these might sound like no-brainer components to a digital health company since they are working in the healthcare sector. It is also a rapidly expanding one where investments were heavily channeled into during the pandemic. However, some estimate that 90% of digital health startups will go bust or be ‘acqui-hired’ within a few years of being founded. If digital health represents the future of medicine and healthcare, it is important to understand why this is the case.  We previously dissected the reasons as to ...

In AF why the ventricular rate is irregular?
Here is a case report from Dr. Brugada’s group. What is your diagnosis? Source & Courtesy Sergio Richter, Joseph Brugada et all , 100(1), 154–156. doi:10.1016/j.amjcard.2007.02.067 Whoever diagnosed AF in the above ECG need not feel bad. The rhythm is not AF, though it mimics very closely. In cardiology, especially in electrophysiology, we can get surprises on a daily basis. (Read below) Why the ventricular rate is irregular in AF? Atrial fibrillation (AF)  may sound like a  simple clinical arrhythmia until we ask this delicate question. The traditional and fairly accepted answer is that, AV node w...

2021 Cover Art Honorable Mentions
In response to our first annual call for cover art in 2021, we received an overwhelming number of submissions. We were thrilled with the number and quality of submissions, and we are grateful for and humbled by the authors’ artwork, insights, stories, and reflections. Because we are able to print only a fraction of the cover art we received, we wanted to acknowledge the artists whose work we loved but cannot publish. The following artists have received an honorable mention: Study, by Richard Buchanan, MFA. Oil on linen. Reprinted with the artist’s permission. For more of this artist, check out:...

A man his 50s with chest pain. What happens when you treat with morphine rather than with reperfusion?
Written by Pendell MeyersA man in his late 50s presented to the ED with 3 days of left chest pain radiating into the jaw and neck. He described it as " heartburn. " The pain radiates into his left arm and causes numbness and tingling from time to time. The history does not state what changed on day 3 that made him finally present to the ED; the history has no details as to whether the pain was off and on, or fluctuating, or whether the pain become persistent soon before arrival (these are key details and would help with many important questions we will have below!). Vitals were normal, and his triage ECG is below, at...
