AR Headset Helps Surgeons Place Implants: Interview with Louie Vogt of Enovis Surgical
Enovis, a medtech company based in Delaware formerly known as DJO, recently announced the launch of ARVIS (Augmented Reality Visualization and Information System), an augmented reality technology that is designed to assist surgeons during implant placement in the hip and knee. The hands-free technology consists of an eyepiece that is mounted on a surgical helmet that provides the surgeon with real-time information about the position of an implant with respect to patient anatomy. It can be difficult for a surgeon to accurately track patient anatomy obscured by a variety of obstacles, such as sterile drapes. The aim behin...

A woman in her 30s with several days of chest pain and an episode of altered mental status.
Written by Pendell Meyers, reviewed by Smith, Grauer, McLarenA woman in her early 30s with history of diabetes had 2-3 days of gradual onset nonradiating chest pain with associated nausea, malaise, and shortness of breath. Then she had an " abrupt change in her mental status and became more somnolent and less responsive " at home in front of her family. Her family called EMS, who found the patient awake and alert complaining of worsening chest pain compared to the prior few days.En route to the ED, they recorded this ECG and transmitted it, asking whether the cath lab should be activated:What do you think? There is sinus rh...

In this study, we used the recently released Infinium Mouse Methylation BeadChip to compare such epigenetic modifications in C57BL/6 (B6) and DBA/2J (DBA) mice. We observed marked differences in age-associated DNA methylation in these commonly used inbred mouse strains, indicating that epigenetic clocks for one strain cannot be simply applied to other strains without further verification. Interestingly, the CpGs with highest age-correlation were still overlapping in B6 and DBA mice and included the genes Hsf4, Prima1, Aspa, and Wnt3a. Furthermore, Hsf4, Aspa, and Wnt3a revealed highly significant age-associated DNA methyla...

Looking Inside Your Body In 3D – The Curiscope Virtuali-tee Review
We first reviewed the Curiscope Virtuali-tee a few years ago and found it futuristic, forward-looking and fun. Whenever these three attributes characterise a technology, we know it’s a jackpot. The Virtuali-tee Human Body T-shirt created by Curiscope has all three qualifiers – and one more. It’s our secret weapon for blowing people’s minds with augmented reality. Four years have passed since we first laid on hands on it, so it was time to take another look at it and see if our opinions have changed. Spoiler alert: no, we still like it. What is it? The T-shirt and the accompanying app show colorful hum...

Considering the Longevity of Elephants
Much of the recent research into the longevity of large mammals such as elephants has focused on Peto's paradox. If the odds of cancer are based on the number of cells in the body, all of which undergo stochastic and potentially cancerous mutations at some rate, then how is it that large mammals, with many times more cells in their body, do not exhibit a correspondingly larger risk of cancer? The answer being that for larger mammals to evolve at all, their cancer risk must be managed downward by changes in cellular biochemistry that reduce mutation rate or more efficiently destroy potentially cancerous cells. In elephants ...

A man in his 50s with hypoxemic respiratory failure from COVID pneumonia develops chest pain
Submitted by anonymous, written by Parker Hambright, MD, peer reviewed by Meyers, Smith, McLarenA man in his 50s with a past medical history of hypertension and tobacco use disorder, who tested COVID positive 11 days prior, presented to the emergency department with worsening shortness of breath over several days. He was tachypneic and hypoxemic down to as low as 44% with reportedly good SpO2 waveform before EMS applied noninvasive ventilation with improvement to 85-89%. Although history was limited by extremis, the report is that there was no chest pain at initial presentation, only shortness of breath. Here is his ECG on ...

A woman in her 40s with intractable nausea and vomiting, dyspnea, and lightheadedness
Submitted and written by Oriane Longerstaey MD, peer reviewed by Meyers, Smith, and McLarenA woman in her 40s with diabetes and HLD presented with nausea and vomiting x3 days. She was seen on day 1 of symptoms at an outside ED, no ECG performed, and sent home with return precautions and zofran, which she had been taking around the clock for persistent nausea and vomiting. She presented on day 3 of symptoms because of new onset dyspnea, tachycardia, lightheadedness, and heart palpitations. She had a " burning " sensation in her chest but no " pain " .A 12 lead EKG was obtained at triage: - Sinus rhythm at 96 bpm&...

My journey being gaslighted about obesity, skinny fat, and body type
When I was eight years old, I was a star soccer player on a state championship team. During shirts-off practice and while down at the local pool, I noticed how different my body was compared to my peers. After I referenced my scientifically approved human body anatomy book, most of my peers’ bodies looked just Read more… My journey being gaslighted about obesity, skinny fat, and body type originally appeared in KevinMD.com. In conclusion, we show that PVS morphology in mice is variable and that the structure and function of pia suggests a previously unrecognized role in regulating CSF transport and amyloid clearance in aging and disease. Reversing Ovarian Fibrosis in Mice https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2022/07/reversing-ovarian-fibrosis-in-mice/ Researchers here provide evidence for ovarian fibrosis to be an important mechanism in limiting the age at which female mammals can remain fertile. Interestingly, existing antifibrotic drugs can produce some reversal of this fibrosis, enough to restore ovulation in mice. Fibro...

Pneumatic Prosthesis to Reduce Pressure and Irritation for Amputees
At the University of Waterloo in Canada, researchers have developed a microfluidic-based pneumatic system that adjusts the pressure within the socket of a lower limb prosthesis. The aim is to achieve the ideal pressure and adjust the fit of the prosthesis to compensate for changes in the size of the residual limb because of swelling. Current lower limb prostheses require users to change silicone and fabric liners manually to adjust the fit of their prosthetic device. This is suboptimal, particularly in patients with diabetes who may have limited feeling in their residual limb, leading to chafing and ulceration. This new de...

Self-Powered Implant Tracks Spinal Fusion Healing
Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh created a self-powered implant that can track spinal healing while also providing mechanical support. The device can be 3D printed so that it fits a given patient perfectly and the mechanical properties can also be easily tuned to customize for each situation. The spinal fusion cage contains a triboelectric nanogenerator that creates electricity when it is pressurized by the spine. This powers an on-board sensor that measures the pressure on the cage, which is indicative of spinal healing. Spinal fusion cages are often inserted by surgeons to provide support after fusion surgeri...
