Hair growth with dupilumab in alopecia areata universalis and atopic dermatitis
We report the case of a 46-year-old woman who has suffered from severe atopic dermatitis since early childhood and from alopecia areata totalis since she was 18 years old, which has now developed into alopecia areata universalis. After the introduction of therapy with the monoclonal antibody dupilumab, renewed hair growth of the scalp, face and lower legs was observed. Dupilumab blocks the α‑subunit of interleukin (IL)-4 receptor and prevents the signaling cascade of IL‑4 and IL-13. This leads to a reduction of Th2 immune response. The severe eczema and itching with difficulties falling and staying asleep decreased af...

Association between alopecia areata and thyroid dysfunction
Postgrad Med. 2021 Aug 28. doi: 10.1080/00325481.2021.1974689. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlopecia Areata is an inflammatory and T cell-mediated autoimmune reaction against unknown autoantigen of hair follicles characterized by patchy, non-scarring loss of hair follicles in the anagen phase. Although its etiology is minimally understood, genetic susceptibility, autoimmunity and stress are thought to be causative factors. It occurs in episodic and recurrent patterns with an incidence rate of 0.1-0.2% in the general population and 7-30 cases per 1000 dermatological patients with a lifetime risk of 1.7%. The lesions can be...

Alopecia Areata: an Update on Etiopathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Management
AbstractAlopecia areata (AA) is a common chronic tissue-specific autoimmune disease, resulting in hair loss, that affects up to 2% of the general population. The exact pathobiology of AA has still remained elusive, while the common theory is the collapse of the immune privilege of the hair follicle caused by immunological mechanism. Multiple genetic and environment factors contribute to the pathogenesis of AA. There are several clinical treatments for AA, varying from one or multiple well-defined patches to more diffuse or total hair loss of the scalp (alopecia totalis) or hair loss of the entire body (alopecia universalis...

28064 The study about clinical characteristics and prognosis of alopecia totalis
Alopecia totalis (AT) usually has a poor prognosis, and treatment failure is seen in most patients regardless of the type of therapy. A current limitation is that these old data are routinely cited in recent review papers. We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with AT through clinical manifestations and skin biopsies from 2006 to 2017 in Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong, Seoul, Korea. Among them, patients with follow-up time less than 2 years were excluded. We collected clinical and demographic information such as age, sex, and underlying diseases at the first visit. Association of Alopecia Areata With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Stimulant Medication: A Case-Control Study
Conclusion: Although the sample size of cases with AU was small, we found a significant association between AU and ASM. While further study is needed, practitioners may consider close monitoring of patients with AA who use ASM for the development of worsening disease and discontinue the medication if the patient experiences an increase in hair loss that appears to be progressing to AU.PMID:34239372 | PMC:PMC8238113 | DOI:10.31486/toj.20.0025 (Source: Ochsner Journal)
