New study: early-stage MGUS/SMM/CLL patients test arabinoxylan rice bran and curcumin
This study was carried out on cells, though, not human beings. But today, about five years later, we have the results of a small study carried out on 20 curcumin-taking human beings with stable, early-stage MGUS, SMM, and CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia). And it’s a Terry Golombick (et al) study, to boot. Here’s the link to the full study, which is available for free online (love that!): http://goo.gl/6n2X3U The Golombick team tested Ribraxx, a combination of a rice bran and shiitake mushroom extract (too bad it isn’t chocolate with almonds!!!), together with a form of C3 Complex curcumin called Cur...

Almond-Lemon Torte w/ Strawberries
The never ending search for the perfect Seder dessert continues. This one’s coming close. Of course, my family would probably say the prefect Passover dessert has already been found in my mother in law Irene’s hazelnut strawberry shortcake. Problem is, delicious as it is, I can’t bring the shortcake to my kosher friends’ seder tomorrow, since it is served with whipped cream and the Seder is a meat meal. (My husband’s family is, as Jerry Seinfeld says, “Jew-ish”…) Hence my search. The fallen middle in this torte is a given. It’s what happens when you depend on eggs alone...

Triple Cocoa Bars
These healthy Triple Cocoa Bars will blast you with chocolate and cocoa from every direction! Look for cacao nibs in health food stores, specialty food stores, Whole Foods Market, or at nuts.com. If unavailable, the bars are still delicious without them. These bars contain around 4-5 grams “net” carbs per bar, well within the tolerance for most people. Yields approximately 10 bars 1 cup ground almonds 2 tablespoons coconut flour 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup cacao nibs 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut 2 ounces 85-90% cocoa chocolate, finely chopped 3/4 cup raw pumpkin or sunflower seeds Swee...

"At @oatmealsny, which opened in Greenwich Village in 2012, oats are, finally, properly adored. Not as a conveyor of health benefits, but as an indulgence. The cafe serves 30-odd variations of oatmeal inspired by Asian cuisines, candy and Elvis. Here, @andrewscrivani photographed @oatmealsny's Indian-spiced oatmeal, which combines the flavors of chai, cardamom and crystallized ginger, and is mixed with almonds, raisins and a splash of coconut milk. Visit the link in our profile to read the full @nytfood review." By nytimes on Instagram. Posted on infosnack. (Source: Kidney Notes)

Test results 2016
About 15 months have zoomed by since my last lab tests and so I was delighted to find no significant change in today's test results. My blood creatinine level remains at 2.0mg/dl, which is right where it was when I was first diagnosed with chronic kidney disease almost seven years ago. Kidney disease tends to progress so I consider avoiding progression an achievement! You can view 7 years of my test results, from initial diagnosis to present, here. I can't say if my attempt to live a healthy lifestyle has been a factor in avoiding progression of the disease but it probably doesn't hurt (and has other benefits...

No folate fortification for the grain-free
Advocates of wheat and grain consumption claim that multiple nutritional deficiencies will develop if we eliminate them from our diet. Not true. Let’s explore this question. Folates are a B vitamin necessary for multiple cell processes, including assembly of DNA and RNA. Folates are therefore especially necessary during pregnancy, as the fetus requires this nutrient to assemble and grow its own genetic code. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for folates and folic acid, which are lumped together as Dietary Folate Equivalents, is 400 mcg per day in adults (male and female), 600 mcg per day in pregnant females. (1 ...

Jumbo Gingerbread Nut Muffin Recipe
At first glance, these tasty Gingerbread Nut muffins from the Wheat Belly 10-Day Grain Detox may not seem sufficient to stand alone as lunch, but once you try these jumbo-size, nut- and oil- rich muffins, you will appreciate how filling they are. And, because they are made with eggs, coconut oil, almonds, and other nuts and seeds, they are also very healthy. You can also add a schmear of cream cheese or a bit of unsweetened fruit butter for extra flavor. To fill out a lunch, add a chunk of cheese, some fresh berries or sliced fruit, or an avocado. As with any Wheat Belly recipe in which one of our benign sweeteners is use...

The resurrection of taste
Portrait of a man with his tongue out “Candy now tastes sickeningly sweet.” “Almonds are sweet.” “Foods taste better.” “My daughter now loves asparagus.” I’ve heard these comments from Wheat Belly lifestyle followers numerous times over the years, observations that reflect the change in taste perception that develops with wheat and grain elimination from the diet. Unlike many other aspects of this lifestyle, you’ll find no formal clinical studies of this effect, given the low priority taste perception rates in health considerations. But it is such a consistent eff...
