Wheat Belly: Quick and Dirty #3
In view of the many new readers on the Wheat Belly Blog, many of whom have not yet had an opportunity to read the book but are eager to get started, here is the most recently updated Wheat Belly Quick & Dirty summary. It summarizes the essential dietary strategies of the Wheat Belly approach to 1) avoid all products made from high-yield, semi-dwarf wheat that wreak health destruction along with all other grains, and 2) create a diet that is otherwise healthy and appropriate for all members of the family. In particular, I’ve tried to clarify some items that were unclear in previous versions. This is the lifestyle ...

8 Foods that Boost Your Mood
What we eat might not be able to cure us indefinitely from depression. I learned that hard lesson earlier this year. However, researchers are compiling strong evidence that what we eat can influence our risk for developing depression and can keep persons in remission from possibly relapsing. Eating better foods has certainly helped my mood and allowed me to get by on less medication. A 2014 review published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined the link between diet and depression risk and found that a diet consisting mainly of fruit, vegetables, fish, and whole grains was significantly associated with a r...

Eating the Same Foods Repeatedly Is Stupid
Do you have a tendency to eat the same foods over and over? Are you aware that it’s much better for your overall health, mental functioning, and immunity to take in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts, and seeds? Eating the same limited foods repeatedly increases the chance that you’ll miss out on certain micronutrients, including many that haven’t been identified or studied yet. A nutritionally restricted diet also increases your susceptibility to disease. Our forager ancestors moved around a lot and ate nutritionally different wild foods wherever they went. With the rise of agriculture, h...

Having an adequate milk supply for your baby is essential to his/her nutrition. If you are looking to increase lactation these following foods can help: Water While not a food, water is one of the most important items needed for an adequate milk supply. “According to studies, 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.” Try drinking 8 glasses (64 ounces) of water a day, especially when starting to breastfeed. Oatmeal Oatmeal is known to help lower cholesterol and regulate your blood pressure, but did you know it can also help in building and maintaining your milk supply? On World MS Day, Multiple Sclerosis Had Me Facedown in My Soup
Yesterday was World MS Day, which this year had the theme #LifewithMS. I’d hoped to spend the day celebrating what I call “the living part” of our life with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the week leading up to the big day had been rather busy. One day a large group of friends who were on a tour of Ireland came for a dinner party, and the next day renowned musicians Hanz Araki and Owen Marshall arrived and stayed with us for a few days. On top of that, there were behind-the-scenes preparations to be done for MS Ireland’s World MS Day event announcing the report “Quality of Life of people living wi...

Amaretto Panna Cotta
Here’s a recipe for Amaretto Panna Cotta that is reminiscent of the flavors of amaretto liqueur. Traditional panna cotta is nothing more than gelatinized cream with added flavors. In this Wheat Belly version, I replace cream with coconut milk, but this introduces a need to blend the mixture in order to keep the coconut oil in the coconut milk suspended. I also, of course, replace the sugar with the natural sweeteners of Virtue Sweetener, converting an indulgent dessert into a healthy dish. I used the Trader Joe’s canned coconut milk as it has no BPA and no emulsifying agents. This basic recipe is easily modif...

How Is Stress Impacting Our Heart Health?
Over the years, the link between heart disease and emotional stress has been discussed. The link is clear, but experts had no idea of exactly how those two conditions are linked. A recent study, originally published in the Lancet, has provided new insight regarding brain activity within the amygdala and heart disease. We are all walking around with two of these amygdalae — which means “almonds” in latin, so called because they resemble almonds in shape and size. They are in deep inside the brain on both sides more or less where your ear sits and they process emotions, particularly stress and fear. The st...

Autumn Anxiety is Real and Treatable
It happens every year. As I watch the first golden leaves fall from the oak tree outside our house and listen to the sound of the cicadas ushering in autumn, my anxiety spikes. I used to think I was relapsing into depression, but having been through this year after year (and documenting it in my mood journal), I now know I’m just going through my annual bout of autumn anxiety: a nervous feeling in my gut that begins the last week of August and continues through the first weeks of September. I’m hardly alone. Many of my friends who battle anxiety — and even those that don’t have a mood disorder — say ...

Walnuts Get A Calorie Cut
If you enjoy nuts but have been concerned about calories, you can allow yourself a few more walnuts without feeling guilty - they don’t contain as many calories as we once believed. Researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have found that a 1-ounce serving of the nuts actuallyprovides 39 fewer calories than listed on the USDA Nutrient Database. That’s a 21 percent reduction. The old count was based on a 19th century calculation that’s been found wanting. Determining the true count involved recruiting 18 healthy adults randomly assigned to a 3-week controlled diet without walnuts, and then ...

Summer Fruit Cake
Labor Day weekend at the cottage with good friends. A bittersweet end to summer. Lake swimming, hiking, biking, reading, stargazing. Shunpiking* to discover gorgeous vistas, plump red sumac berries ripe for the picking (and drying for spice – I”ll post on that later) and the best garage sale ever. Making Irene’s summer fruit cake to bring to an outdoor dinner party on an evening cool enough to end inside around a burning wood stove. (Thanks Rick for leaving the stove door open so we could see the fire.) We left a day early, warned that the impending hurricane would make return to the coast near imposs...
