Sleep Better with Food and Fitness
Just as sleep is important to our body, what we do with our body in terms of food and exercise plays a major role in the way we sleep (or don’t sleep).  Good nutrition and exercise can help you sleep, but poor sleep leads to poor eating and exercise decisions immediately. A lack of shut-eye is linked with ditching your workout. It’s one thing to skip the workout to get more sleep once in awhile, but if you ditch your workout and cheat yourself of sleep, then you aren’t breaking the cycle. Contrary to what we have all been told, eating prior to bed is not such a bad thing after all.  In fact, a light snack contai...

Almond Cake
One of life’s better days. Started with having both girls home for dinner. Add in daylight savings time and the first bike ride of the season in Central Park and life is pretty damned good.  Then give me a sunny afternoon in the kitchen baking and I’m over the top. This cake will put you over the top, too. From my fave old magazine “Pleasures of Cooking”, it’s dense and sweet but not too sweet due to a touch of lemon tartness and has a wonderfully chewy outer crust. I made the cake substituting olive for vegetable oil, resulting in a slightly richer and denser cake than the original recipe. H...

Let it go: Food Blog Comment Rage
I love reading food blogs. I rarely cook the recipes; I just like to ogle the beautifully-lit photos, fancy serving dishes and lush descriptions. I admire their patience in measuring each ingredient into a tiny spoon or Pyrex bowl, photographing them from above, then doing the washing up afterwards. But it used to get a little messy when I scrolled down to the comments. There was no need to read the comments. I had better things to do than read the comments. Yet I could not resist. Specifically, my eyes sought out the most inane, passive-aggressive or just plain annoying ones… –  I HATE CILANTRO so I will not be m...

Struggles with My Morning Internet Fast
And a New Month Without Refined Carbs By Leo Babauta In my 5th month in the Year of Living Without, I tried going without computers or Internet in the morning. It was more of a struggle than I’d anticipated. My thinking with this month was that I’d be able to get more writing and reading done, and maybe more stretching and other physical activity, if I banned myself from the Internet before noon. This is actually true, and when I stuck to the ban I got a lot of good writing and reading done. My problem was that I needed to do certain tasks on the Internet before noon, for work and also personal tasks like ...

Thanksgiving: Never Trust An Organic Chemist Who Can't Cook
I wanted to note that I'm home today, and will soon be starting my traditional chocolate pecan pie. If you haven't seen it, that link will lead you to a detailed prep, with both US and metric measurements. It's based on Craig Claiborne's recipe, and he certainly knew what he was talking about when it came to Southern food (and much else besides). I've been making it for twenty years now, and if I didn't, there would be a mutiny around here. I have a pumpkin pie to make as well, and I'd like to get the base of the gravy going, so it can be turkey-enhanced tomorrow. (As for the turkey, for some years now we've bought a kosh...

Wheat Belly holiday recipes II
Now for the desserts! Here are recipes for Pumpkin Pie, Apple Cranberry Crumble, and Pumpkin Spice Muffins. Remember: By taking out wheat and other grains, not resorting to gluten-free junk carbohydrate replacements, not adding sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, limiting net carbohydrate content and not using other problem ingredients, we now have healthy desserts that do not pack on the pounds, screw with blood sugar, mess with satiety signals, or exert inflammatory effects. Have your Apple Cranberry Crumble or Pumpkin Spice Muffin and suffer not a moment of guilt! And I think they’re pretty darned tasty, too. Hap...

Foods That Fight…Illness, That Is
By Amy Campbell That time of the year is upon us: the "holidays." It's not even Thanksgiving yet, but the stores are already filled with Christmas decorations and gifts. Holiday music is playing on radio stations. Holidays are fun, but this season can come with side effects, including colds and flu, heartburn, upset stomach, headaches, muscle aches, and fatigue. Medicine is often needed to treat these maladies, but if you're looking for something a little more natural and gentle, think, instead, about food. Food is medicine, too, and what better way to remedy your maladies and nourish your body at the same time? Colds and ...

Get Some Protein in Your Meatless Monday by Infusing Your Dishes with Nut Butters
We all know that nut butters -- whether they are made from almonds, cashews or peanuts -- are full of delicious flavor and nutrients. However, we tend to usually enjoy these in their most classic iterations: on a sandwich, as a dip for fruit and even for baking. But listen, with plenty of healthy fats and a ton of protein, creamy nut butters are an ideal addition to sauces, dressings, soups and other meatless mains. Check out a few of my fave recipes here. Almonds For Skinny Snackers? Yes, They Help Curb Your Appetite : The Salt : NPR
This study was funded by the almond industry, and researchers didn't evaluate other types of nuts.Mattes explains that industry-funded studies are becoming more common, especially as government funding becomes harder to obtain. But he emphasizes that the research is carried out completely independently and is peer-reviewed before being published."So it does have the checks and balances," Mattes concludes.
