In this study, we investigated the effect of NXP032 on neurovascular stabilization through the changes of PECAM-1, PDGFR-β, ZO-1, laminin, and glial cells involved in maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in aged mice. NXP032 was orally administered daily for 8 weeks. Compared to young mice and NXP032-treated mice, 20-month-old mice displayed cognitive impairments in Y-maze and passive avoidance tests. NXP032 treatment contributed to reducing the BBB damage by attenuating the fragmentation of microvessels and reducing PDGFR-β, ZO-1, and laminin expression, thereby mitigating astrocytes and microglia ...

Can You Use Hot Tubs With Hypertension?
Are you a hot tub lover with hypertension? While it may seem a relaxing solution, it’s crucial to understand the potential risks and impacts on your blood pressure. Let’s delve in and discover safer relaxation alternatives. Quick Summary The effects of hot tub use on hypertension can vary from person to person, as increased body temperature can cause blood vessels to dilate and potentially lower blood pressure, but the response in individuals with hypertension is less predictable. CADDAC ’S ADHD And Substance Use Disorder Peer-Led Support Groups
This is great news by CADDAC and Health Canada to create ADHD and substance use disorder peer-led support groups in the fall. They’re looking now for peer support facilitators now with lived experience who are willing to be trained and run them. Will be offered a stipend for their time. Hope people with ADHD ask their MLAs to get provincial health departments to create ADHD and substance use disorder (SUD) peer-led support groups too. ADHD people are 4-8 times + more likely to have SUD. Provinces should also require ALL rehabs to screen for ADHD. Every BC rehab I’ve asked at community events in Vancouver does n...

A digression
While I dance on the graves of Pat Robertson and James Watt (only the good die young, it seems), let ' s take a break from more serious matters and consider this, which I have known all along.Wine snobbery is complete bullshit.  Even the ostensible experts -- wine critics, sommeliers, collectors, winemakers with expensive labels -- can ' t tell Two Buck Chuck or a jug from Chateau Lafitte Rothschild. They can ' t even tell red from white -- they ' re fooled by food coloring. Put an expensive label on a bottle, and they ' ll make all sorts of elaborate comments about it ' s unique qualities and praise it to the skies, ...

The Gut Microbiome Differs in Characteristic Ways in Patients with Precancerous Colon Polyps
The gut microbiome changes with age, the relative abundance of microbial populations shifting in ways that appear connected to chronic inflammation and dysfunction of the intestinal epithelium and intestinal barrier function. Cancer of the colon is an important cause of human mortality, and there is some hope that finding ways to prevent or reverse gut microbiome aging, such as via fecal microbiota transplant from young individuals, will go some way to minimizing colon cancer incidence. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S., and rates of colorectal cancer are rising amon...

A Hand Up, Not a Hand-Out
BY KIM BELLARD As many of you did, I followed the recent debt ceiling saga closely, and am relieved that we now have a compromise, of sorts.  The House Republicans demanded a lot of things, most of which they did not get, but one area where they did prevail was in toughening work requirements for food (SNAP) and income (TANF).  They somehow believe that there are uncounted numbers of “able-bodied” people sitting around on their couches collecting government benefits, a myth that goes back to Ronald Reagan’s welfare queen stereotype, and have long advocated work requirements as the remedy.  Ironic...

Don ’ t Blame Burnout
BY SANJ KATYAL It is hard to open a medical journal in any specialty without seeing an article on burnout. There are statistics, trends, and of course a myriad of causes detailed in these articles. A few even offer some sensible solutions – flexible scheduling, peer support, delegation of clerical work and an increased focus on personal well-being activities are steps in the right direction.  I have previously written that “the absence of burnout does not equal wellness” just as the absence of disease does not imply health. We deserve more than simply the ability to function, we deserve to flourish. Th...

Masked Hypertension: Your Silent Health Threat
Conclusion Masked hypertension is a silent threat that occurs when normal blood pressure readings at the doctor’s office conceal high readings at home or elsewhere. Although the precise cause remains uncertain, factors like smoking, excessive alcohol, and work-related stress appear to play a role. Despite the symptomless nature of this condition, regular monitoring of blood pressure can help detect and manage it effectively, preventing serious complications. Regular lifestyle modifications and prescribed medications can help keep this masked menace at bay. References Cuspidi, C., et al. (2023). Masked hy...

Self-Reported Data From Several Hundred Rapamycin Self-Experimenters
This study has several limitations that make the data less reliable than what would be obtained from a double-blind, randomized clinical trial. The self-reported nature of the data and the possibility of unintended bias in the participant pool reduce confidence that these results would be recapitulated in a larger, more heterogenous population. In particular, we cannot rule out the possibility that the population of rapamycin users is self-selected against people who started taking rapamycin and stopped because of negative experiences; however, we attempted to recruit as broadly as possible to include such individuals both...
