Unhealthy Lifestyle and Childhood Adversity Correlated with Phenotypic Age Acceleration
The epidemiological study noted here makes use of phenotypic age, a simple biomarker-based aging clock. The calculation used to derive a phenotypic age based on common biomarkers can be in the methods section of the paper, for those interested. It is a mortality-related calculation, and a higher phenotypic age is presumed to indicate a greater risk of age-related disease and death. Where phenotypic age is greater than chronological age, this may represent a faster pace of aging in that individual, as is the case for epigenetic clocks and epigenetic age acceleration. The conclusion reached in the study here is that u...

Fentanyl Is Smuggled for U.S. Citizens By U.S. Citizens, Not Asylum Seekers
ConclusionBorder enforcement will not stop fentanyl smuggling. Border Patrol ' s experience with marijuana smuggling may provide even clearer evidence for this fact. Marijuana is the bulkiest and easiest-to-detect drug, which is why it was largely trafficked between ports of entry. Despite doubling the Border Patrol and building a border fence in the 2000s in part to combat the trade, the only thing that actually reduced marijuana smugglingwas U.S. states legalizing marijuana. It is absurd to believe that interdiction will be more effective against a drug that is orders of magnitude more difficult to detect. The DEA plainly...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 25, 2022 Edition-----The big story this week has been the multiple PM story in Australia with ScoMo. What an amazing saga!In the UK there seems to be an impending collapse of the economy coming unless some-one takes some really smart steps real soon now.Relatively the US has seemed pretty calm this week – just waiting for an impending recession – along with China and Europe.Fair to say things globally are pretty messy!-----Major Issues.-----https://www.afr.com/markets/equity-markets/every-investing-trend-misfires-as-stock-bears-are-crushed-20220814-p5b9o2Every investing trend misfires as stock bears are crushedD...

Mining Ultrasound Data to Improve Liver Diagnostics: Interview with Beth Rogozinski, CEO at Oncoustics
Oncoustics, a medtech company based in Ontario, Canada, developed the OnX Liver Assessment Solution, an AI-powered ultrasound-based diagnostic system for liver disease. At present, detecting liver disease is a challenge, potentially involving high-end imaging systems, specialists, and invasive biopsies. These challenges, and the related expense, can limit patient access to such testing for those with strong indications of liver disease. Consequently, in many cases, liver disease may not be detected until it is already quite advanced, limiting the potential for early detection and treatment. There is a clear need for a n...

Taxes, Regulations, and Small Business in California ’s Marijuana Industry
David BoazCalifornians voted in 2016 to legalize marijuana for adult recreational use. The voter initiative,Proposition 64, provided for taxes, licensing, and a county option on whether to allow marijuana businesses at all (much like the alcohol rules in my home state of Kentucky, where some counties are “dry” to this day). Libertarians applauded the advance for liberty, and mostly understood that some taxes and regulation were inevitable — what product isn’t taxed and regulated in modern America? — butwarnedthat excessive taxes and regulations could keep much of the marijuana tradein the black market.Well, ...

How not go get cancer
The Global Burden of Disease project is a decades long international collaboration, based at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, but involving researchers around the world. It was originally funded by the World Bank, and now receives its principal support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. GBD (not to be confused with golden brown and delicious) essentially tries to quantify the prevalence of diseases, and injuries around the world; the prevalence of associated disability; causes of death; and risk factors. They use a lot of complicated methods. If you ' re really ...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 18, 2022 Edition-----The main issue, probably of the year, is the increasing tension across the Taiwan Strait with all sorts of worries about how conflict can be avoided and prosperity maintained at a reasonable level as tensions continue. And hopefully ease. The impact of climate change in Europe is really becoming obvious and worrying. I am not sure just how a realistic response is possible in any reasonable time.In OZ the PM has come back after a week off to have the Chinese Ambassador tell us we are a vassal and to just shut up and behave. Astonishing and serious stuff IMVHO.-----Major Issues.-----https://www.smh...

Commissioning quality standard: alcohol and drug services
Office for Health Improvement and Disparities - This commissioning quality standard (CQS) sets standards that will guide local partnerships to commission alcohol and drug services more effectively. This guidance helps partnerships to: clarify the commissioning process they should follow; plan and deliver harm reduction, treatment and recovery interventions; understand local need for alcohol and drug services; assess whether anyone affected by problem alcohol and drug use is able to access the right support at the right time; and provide high-quality support from a multi-disciplinary skilled workforce for children, yo...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, August 1st 2022
In this study, we used the recently released Infinium Mouse Methylation BeadChip to compare such epigenetic modifications in C57BL/6 (B6) and DBA/2J (DBA) mice. We observed marked differences in age-associated DNA methylation in these commonly used inbred mouse strains, indicating that epigenetic clocks for one strain cannot be simply applied to other strains without further verification. Interestingly, the CpGs with highest age-correlation were still overlapping in B6 and DBA mice and included the genes Hsf4, Prima1, Aspa, and Wnt3a. Furthermore, Hsf4, Aspa, and Wnt3a revealed highly significant age-associated DNA methyla...
