The Prevalence and Association of Biofilms With Otitis Media With Effusion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: The data presented in this study coincide with the significant role of bacterial biofilms in the pathogenesis of chronic otitis media with effusion. The involvement of bacterial biofilm as a component of the OME pathogenic process can help us to explain why antimicrobial therapy is not always effective in the eradication of the disease process and, also explain the recurrence of middle ear effusion after treatment with tympanostomy tubes either with or without adenoidectomy.PMID:37553806 | DOI:10.1177/00034894231188855 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)

Adenoid hypertrophy- diagnosis and treatment: the new S2k guideline
HNO. 2023 Jul 25. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01299-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsils is to be considered pathologic when nasopharyngeal symptoms of mechanical obstruction and/or chronic inflammation occur. Chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction can result in various middle ear diseases such as conductive hearing loss, cholesteatoma, and recurrent acute otitis media. During examination, attention should be paid to the presence of adenoid facies (long face syndrome), with a permanently open mouth and visible tip of the tongue. In the case of severe symptoms and/or failure of conservative treatm...

Adenoidectomy: Anatomical Versus Clinical Success
AbstractEndoscopic adenoidectomy with powered instruments,a challenge in resource-constraint developing countries, has been on the rise. To evaluate conventional curettage as compared to endoscopic assisted adenoidectomy in the successful management of adenoid enlargement. A randomized controlled double-blinded study among children undergoing adenoidectomywas done. Primary outcomes were assessed by pre- and postoperative evaluation with a symptoms questionnaire and fiberoptic nasal endoscopy. There were 71 children aged 3 –15 years, majority having grade III adenoids. Conventional adenoidectomy was done by the surgeon w...

Endoscopic Assisted Cold Steel adenoidectomy – A Cost Effective Modification for Better Outcome
ConclusionEACSA is an effective modification to CSA. It adds the benefits of endoscopic visualization of adenoid for the conventional curettage. The high recurrence rates of CA can be effectively reduced with no significant variation in duration of surgery. (Source: Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery)

Obstructive sleep apnea affects the psychological and behavioural development of children-a case-control study
This study aims to investigate the effects of obstructive sleep apnea on paediatric psychological and behavioural abnormalities. A total of 1086 paediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea and 728 sample snoring controls were enrolled in the study. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea underwent bilateral tonsillectomy plus adenoidectomy or adenoidectomy alone. Repeated Autism Behaviour Checklist, Spence Children's Anxiety Scale, and Children's Depression Inventory were performed to assess the autism symptoms, anxiety level and depressive symptoms before and after surgery. The score of Autism Behaviour Checklist in pr...
