The effect on the T-14 paediatric throat disorders outcome score of delaying adenotonsillectomy surgery due to COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that following delays resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, paediatric patients experienced an improvement in some aspects of their quality of life while awaiting tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. This was most apparent in quality-of-life measures relating to recurrent tonsillitis, namely visits to a doctor/A&E, antibiotics for less than 2 weeks, chronic infections and school missed due to sore throats. Patients may experience an improvement in some of their individual symptoms, in particular their infective symptoms, during an observation period.PMID:35446154 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann...

Cost and economic determinants of paediatric tonsillectomy
ConclusionsThis study highlights the cost of paediatric tonsillectomy and associated hospital readmissions. The study findings will inform healthcare reform and serve as a basis for strategies to optimise patient outcomes while reducing both postoperative complications and costs.PMID:35380106 | DOI:10.1071/AH21100 (Source: Australian Health Review)

Robust, persistent adaptive immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 in the oropharyngeal lymphoid tissue of children
Res Sq. 2022 Mar 23:rs.3.rs-1276578. doi: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-1276578/v1. Preprint.ABSTRACTSARS-CoV-2 infection triggers adaptive immune responses from both T and B cells. However, most studies focus on peripheral blood, which may not fully reflect immune responses in lymphoid tissues at the site of infection. To evaluate both local and systemic adaptive immune responses to SARS-CoV-2, we collected peripheral blood, tonsils, and adenoids from 110 children undergoing tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy during the COVID-19 pandemic and found 24 with evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, including detectable neutralizing antibodies ag...

Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy - Pediatric Clinics of North America
Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are among the most commonly performed major pediatric operations in the United States, with more than 500,000 procedures performed annually. This procedure can be performed with or without adenoidectomy. These procedures were traditionally performed for recurrent tonsillitis; however, the vast majority of tonsillectomies are currently performed for obstructive symptoms. When performed for appropriate indications, tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy can greatly improve a child ’s quality of life and general health. Given the prevalence of these conditions and subsequent surgical procedures, evi...

Endoscopic Adenoidectomy Replacing the Outdated Curette Adenoidectomy: Comparison of the Two Methods at a Tertiary Care Centre
AbstractTo compare intraoperative and postoperative parameters of the two techniques of adenoidectomy, endoscope  and microdebrider powered adenoidectomy and conventional adenoidectomy. Study Design Prospective study. Setting: Academic tertiary referral centre. In our study, cases of adenoid hypertrophy were randomly selected from the outpatient department of department of ORL& HNS. Out of these patients, 30 underwent Endoscopic adenoidectomy (EA) (Group A) and 30 underwent Conventional adenoidectomy (CA) (Group B). All of the patients were assessed pre-operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively to compare th...

Risk factors for respiratory adverse events after adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy in children with down syndrome: a retrospective cohort study
Conclusions: A multivariable model found evidence that lower average oxygen saturation while asleep was associated with PRAEs requiring intervention in children with Down syndrome. This study highlights the difficulty in predicting complications in this population. What is known:• Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a major cause of morbidity in the Down syndrome population and is commonly treated with adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy.• However, children with Down syndrome are at increased risk for perioperative respiratory adverse events (PRAEs) following adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy. What is new:• We found...

Gabapentin Premedication to Reduce Postoperative Pain for Pediatric Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSIONS: We were able to establish a rigorous process and feasibility to launch a larger, multi-center trial to examine this important issue. There remain few evidence-based options for acute pain relief in pediatric surgical populations besides opiates. Identifying opiate alternatives that are effective, cost efficient and safe are needed for pediatric tonsillectomy patients.PMID:35256248 | DOI:10.1016/j.jopan.2021.11.011 (Source: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing)
