Do sleep disturbances contribute to cognitive impairments in schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorders?

This study aims to investigate if sleep disturbances are related to cognitive impairments in schizophrenia spectrum (SCZ) and bipolar disorders (BD), if this relationship varies between different sleep disturbances (insomnia, hypersomnia or delayed sleep phase (DSP)) and lastly, if this relationship differs between clinical groups and healthy controls (HC). We included 797 patients (SCZ = 457, BD = 340) from the Norwegian Centre for Mental Disorders Research (NORMENT) study in Norway. Sleep disturbances were based on items from the Inventory of Depressive Symptoms-Clinician rated scale (IDS-C). Their relationship with several cognitive domains was tested using separate ANCOVAs. A three-way between-groups ANOVA was conducted to test if the relationship with cognitive impairments varies between different sleep disturbances. These analyses revealed significantly poorer processing speed and inhibition in those with any sleep disturbance versus those without, also after adjusting for several covariates. The relationship between sleep disturbances and cognition was similar across SCZ and BD, and there were significant effects of insomnia and hypersomnia on both processing speed and inhibition. No association between sleep disturbances and cognition was found in HC. Sleep disturbances contribute to cognitive impairments in psychotic disorders. Processing speed and inhibition is poorer in patients with sleep disturbances. Impairments in these domains are r...

Abstract Paliperidone palmitate is a second generation antipsychotic, approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in the form of the long-acting injectable (LAI) products INVEGA SUSTENNA® (once monthly injection) and INVEGA TRINZA® (once every 3 months injection). Paliperidone palmitate dissolves slowly after deep intramuscular injection before being hydrolyzed to paliperidone and absorbed into the systemic circulation. The pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of the INVEGA SUSTENNA® formulation is biphasic, comprised of an initial relatively fast zero-order input, which allows rapid attainment of therapeutic ...

Herein, we prepare a conductive polypyrrole-graphene oxide/polypyrrole-camphorsulfonic acid bilayer composite coating (PPY-GO/PPY-CSA) on 304 stainless steel bipolar plate by electrodeposition method. The electrochemical tests are conducted in ...

In this study, a novel rotating bipolar disc electrolytic (RBDE) reactor was designed for the treatment of textile wastewater and the performance was evaluated. The turbulence created in the system and enhanced mass transport (coagulants/ions) improved the overall performance of electrolytic cell during rotation. The effect of various parameters like current density, electrical conductivity, pH, rotation speed, and pollutant concentration on the performance of the RBDE reactor was examined in terms of COD, colour and TSS removal. Complete decolorization was obtained in 2 min and 6 min of electrolysis time in ...

egi A Abstract BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survivors can experience psychological distress, such as anxiety and depression, long after treatment has ended, and the development of such negative affective states has been related to the coping strategy used. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study aims to determine whether different coping strategies are associated with differences in psychological distress, cortisol, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) levels in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: 54 breast cancer survivors completed the Stress Coping Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and pr...

A busy day at UNISON’s LGBT+ conference saw delegates discuss a number of major issues. Mental health was high on the agenda, with Alan Williams for the union’s North West LGBT group saying that there was a “concerningly high rate of suicide attempts by LGBT+ members” and called for more training for reps on the issues. Hannah Stephenson urged delegates to return to their branches and ask their employers for mental ill health training, while a speaker from the North West talked of how “one person with the right information can make all the difference”. She said that research suggests tha...

Conclusions: Sleep patterns in children and adolescents were related to the psychiatric diagnosis of their parent(s). Future follow-up of these results may clarify the relations between early sleep differences and the risk of developing mood disorders in individuals at high familial risk.IntroductionSleep disturbances are core symptoms of mood disorders including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder (1). Additionally, sleep problems have been associated with more severe symptoms, greater functional impairment, and increased risk for relapse among individuals with mood disorders (2). Over 40% of children and youth...

Sleep is essential to the maintenance of mental health. Sleep helps to regulate mood and process emotional information and experiences into memory. Insufficient sleep is associated with increased emotional reactivity and emotional disturbance. Research indicates that REM sleep may play an especially significant role in maintaining emotional well-being and psychological balance. Sleep problems occur substantially more frequently in people with psychiatric conditions than in the general population. Often, sleep and mental health disorders exist in bi-directional relationship to each other, with each condition influencing the...
