Discussion of: the relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychopathology in adults undergoing bariatric surgery
Childhood maltreatment, which includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse as well as neglect, is a significant, worldwide public health issue. Childhood maltreatment can profoundly affect child development. A single incident of abuse or the cumulative effects of chronic neglect can reverberate into and throughout adulthood, potentially increasing risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, pulmonary disease, and tobacco and alcohol use [1]. The association between childhood maltreatment and psychopathology are well established [2].
