Tuberculous meningitis diagnosis and treatment in adults: A series of 189 suspected cases.

In conclusion, the diagnosis of TBM should combine clinical manifestations, CSF examination and the effect of anti-TB therapy. Differential diagnosis and trial anti-TB therapy may be of help for diagnosis. Positive CSF smear, CSF culture and biopsy of the brain, or biopsy of meninges are golden standards for the diagnosis of TBM. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important for improving the outcome. PMID: 30210618 [PubMed]

Authors: Wu G, Chen X, Cui N, He Y, Fan J, Yan D, Zhu X, Zhu X Abstract Background: Cholestasis is a common but serious clinical condition in preterm neonates. The current management for preterm neonatal cholestasis has limitations. The aim of this study was to determine effects of Bifidobacterium supplementation on the prevention and alleviation of cholestasis in preterm infants with very low birth weight. Methods: Preterm neonates with very low birth weight were enrolled in the Children's Hospital of Soochow University between December 2012 and December 2017. The patients were randomly assigned into Bifidobac...

Serious Complication of Anticoagulation in Vessel Thrombosis-associated Behçet Disease. Intern Med. 2020 Mar 26;: Authors: Ouchi K, Narui R, Sakuma T, Ojiri H Abstract Anticoagulation in venous thrombosis associated with Behçet disease (BD) is controversial. We herein report a 47-year-old woman with vessel thrombosis and pulmonary artery aneurysm (PAA) associated with BD who died of massive hemoptysis under oral anticoagulant. Although she was initially diagnosed with oral contraceptive-induced venous thromboembolism, a subsequent investigation led to a diagnosis of BD. Follow-up computed...

This study aimed to define the effects of LSZ on proinflammatory mediators and neuroprotective effects on middle cerebral artery occlusion and refusion (MCAO/R) rats. Rats were treated with different doses of LSZ (0.54, 1.62, and 4.32 g/(kg·d)) in a week after model building. LSZ could improve the survival rate, ischemic stroke outcome, and infarct volume. In addition, significant decrease was observed in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and inflammatory factor levels in LSZ-treated groups, concomitant with increase in activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), neurosynaptic remodeling, and decrease in bra...

In this study, all 135 patients received CM treatment for at least 36 months. The response rates for CM treatment were 81.53% (106/130) for hematological improvement in 130 MDS-RCMD patients and 80% (4/5) for bone marrow CR in 5 MDS-RAEB patients, respectively. The Human Methylation 850K BeadChip showed that 115 genes (50.88%) were aberrantly hypomethylated in 5 MDS patients compared with 3 healthy individuals. GO-analysis showed that these hypomethylated genes participated in many cancer-related biological functions and pathways. Furthermore, 60 genes were hypermethylated and the protein expression level of DNMT1 was sign...

In this study, to investigate the cellular mechanism of ATEO, the cytoprotective effect of ATEO against H2O2-induced injury was revealed in PC12 cells. ATEO treatment increased the viability of cells affected by H2O2-mediated injury, inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and induced the expression of several antioxidant proteins (SODs, GPx, and UCPs). The cytoprotective effect of ATEO was related to upregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) expression, which was counteracted by PGC-1α specific knockdown. Using inhibitor of protein kinase A (PKA...

Conclusions: In the absence of hydrocephalus or vasculitis, one week of anti-tuberculosis treatment seems to be adequate for the resolution of TBM symptoms. Hydrocephalus and vasculitis delay the resolution of TBM symptoms in response to antimycobacterial treatment.
