Lung Transplantation in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis: A Complex Task, A Changing Target

CYSTIC FIBROSIS is a genetic disorder that affects nearly 40,000 Americans. Approximately 11,000 deaths per year are attributed to cystic fibrosis in the United States. Recent improvements in management have had a significant impact on the cystic fibrosis population —between 1999 and 2020, cystic fibrosis-related mortality decreased from 1.9 to 1.04 per million Americans. Life expectancy has increased from 24 to 37 years. Advances include nationwide newborn screening, infection prevention, targeted nutritional support, enhanced pancreatic function, improved m ucociliary clearance, and the introduction of highly effective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator protein modulators into clinical practice.
