Effect of a pescetarian and vegan diet on fatty acid composition in blood and spermatozoa in young healthy men

Vegetarian diets have increased general interest, given their multiple health benefits [1]. Several vegetarian diets have been described, including flexitarians or semi-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, and vegan diets, the latter imposing stricter dietary restrictions [2,3]. The reasons for following a vegetarian diet are often diverse. These include, but are not limited to, animal welfare, health effects, religion-related beliefs, and environmental protection [4]. Current evidence has confirmed the protective effect of vegetarian diets against metabolic diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, reducing risk factors and improving blood markers [5].
