Osteoporosis Linked with Increased Risk of Later Development of Dementia
This study is the first to address this question in a very large database enabling the case-control-comparison between patients with and without osteoporosis." This retrospective cohort study used data from the Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA), which compiles information on drug prescriptions, diagnoses, and demographic data obtained directly and in anonymous format from computer systems used by general practitioners and specialists. This database has already been used in several studies focusing on osteoporosis and dementia in recent years. The study included patients diagnosed with osteoporosis between January 19...

What happens on Wheat Belly?
Here’s a sampling of some of the many, many magnificent successes people have shared living the Wheat Belly lifestyle. Of course, we can only see what is visible on the surface: changes in facial contours, reduction in skin inflammation, reduction of around-the-eyes puffiness resulting in bigger eyes, reversal of skin rashes. And note that many “befores” are unclear or fuzzy, while “afters” are clear and distinct that I believe reflect the fact that people feel better about themselves, self esteem boosted. You simply cannot achieve these sorts of results by cutting calories, “move mor...

What happened to the first wheat eaters?
In the first Wheat Belly book, I recounted the history of wheat from its wild-growing 14-chromosome einkorn ancestor, to the 28-chromosome emmer of Biblical times, to 42-chromosome spelt and other Triticum species, and finally to high-yield semi-dwarf strains created by agricultural scientists in the 1960s now comprises 99% of all wheat products sold. The quantity of additional changes introduced since are many, including selection of strains enriched in wheat germ agglutinin and phytates for their pest-resistant properties (while increasing human toxicity), gliadin and glutenin for desirable baking characteristics ...

No Cardiovascular Health Benefits Result from Most Common Dietary Supplements
It is well known within the research community that dietary supplements as a class achieve next to nothing for basically healthy people, those lacking any specific deficiency or medical condition that might cause that deficiency. In fact the evidence strongly suggests that some supplements, antioxidants for example, may even be modestly harmful over the long term. This scientific consensus has to compete with the marketing budget of the supplement industry, which seems to be doing fairly well for a community focused on selling a mix of largely useless and mildly harmful products. So studies such as this one continue to rol...

What patients — and doctors — need to know about vitamins and supplements
A recently published clinical guideline on vitamin and mineral supplements reinforces every other evidence-based guideline, research review, and consensus statement on this topic. The bottom line is that there is absolutely no substitute for a well-balanced diet, which is the ideal source of the vitamins and minerals we need. The brief article, co-authored by nutrition guru Dr. JoAnn Manson, cites multiple large clinical trials studying multiple nutritional supplements’ effects on multiple end points. The gist of it is, our bodies prefer naturally occurring sources of vitamins and minerals. We absorb these better. And be...

Does Vitamin D Deficiency Contribute to Brain Disorders?
In this study published in July 2017, researchers looked at the vitamin D levels and cognitive function in patients who experienced psychosis. They found an association between low levels of vitamin D and decreased processing speed and verbal fluency. The authors suggested the next step should be randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation in those with psychosis and vitamin D deficiency. Another study, published in Psychiatry Research in August 2017, looked at whether vitamin B12, homocysteine folic acid, and vitamin D might be connected to childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Fifty-two children an...

Is a Vitamin D placebo trial in children with asthma ethical?
by Craig Klugman, Ph.D. In a 2017 article from India, researchers conducted a meta-analysis looking at vitamin D deficiency and asthma in children. They found a correlation—children with asthma were more likely to have a deficiency—but they did not find a causation—that the deficiency caused asthma, or that asthma caused the deficiency. For example, it’s possible that asthmatic children go outside less because they are more likely to have an asthma attack and thus are less exposed to sunshine, leading to lower levels of Vitamin D.… (Source: blog.bioethics.net)

Amazon reviews for Undoctored
Here’s a sample of the recent Amazon reviews for my book, Undoctored: Why Health Care Has Failed You and How You Can Become Smarter Than Your Doctor. I am encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive feedback, as we are in a virtual war with Big Pharma, the medical device industry, and the hospital industry, all working around-the-clock to take more money out of your pocket while denying you real health. The powerful and pervasive campaign of misinformation conducted by many people in healthcare is impossible to ignore. Getting the Undoctored message out to the public is more important than ever before. The real tragedy...

Calcium, vitamin D, and fractures (oh my!)
When I saw the headlines about this recently published study on bone health saying “Vitamin D and calcium supplements may not lower fracture risk” I thought: Wait, that’s news? I think I remember seeing that headline a few years ago. Indeed, in 2015, this very blog reported on similar studies of calcium supplements, noting that calcium supplements have risks and side effects, and are not likely indicated for most healthy community-dwelling adults over 50. These folks are not in a high-risk category for vitamin deficiencies, osteoporosis, and fractures, and we usually advise them to get their calcium from food. Dietar...

Be ketotic . . . but only sometime
Achieving ketosis by engaging in a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat lifestyle is an effective means of losing weight, breaking insulin and leptin resistance, reversing type 2 diabetes and fatty liver, reducing blood pressure, reversing the inflammation of visceral fat, and may even cause partial or total remission of selected cancers. So what’s the problem? The problem comes when people remain ketotic for extended periods. We know with confidence that long-term ketosis poses substantial risk for health complications because thousands of children have followed ketogenic diets over the years as a means of suppressing in...
