I don't feel your pain - Ideas - The Boston Globe
IF YOU STOPPED the average person in an emergency room and asked why she's there—not just her guess at the problem, but what really motivated her to show up—the number one answer would be "pain." For all that modern medicine has learned about disease and treatment, it's alleviating pain that still lies at the heart of the profession. And in recent years, the notion of treating "pain" as its own entity has been rising to the forefront in medicine. Pain management now has its own journals, conferences, clinics, and specialists, and pain relief is sometimes referred to as a human right. The In...

Good bye, my love.
Two months ago, Dixie seemed to be feeling under the weather. She wasn't eating well, and seemed to have less energy. I took her to my vet and she was diagnosed with anaplasmosis. (a tick borne illness) She tested a "faint positive" right at the end of the testing window. The vet prescribed antibiotics and said that Dixie should feel better in a few days.A few days later, she wasn't doing any better. I brought her back to the vet and they did an X-ray to "rule out" anything more significant. The vet saw a shadow on her X-ray and sent it to the University of Minnesota vet hospital to have it read by a radiologist. The repor...

Beauty and the Asp
Dear Readers:  The following story is fictional. Any resemblance to anyone real, living, dead, or otherwise, is purely in the warped mind of the beholder.Once upon a time, a phrase that amuses physicists no end, there was a King and Queen who lived in a modest but nicely-furnished castle in the Land of Iodine. They were what one might call enlightened. They ruled their little nation with as much kindness and wisdom as they could muster, and their subjects prospered. The royal couple had a beautiful little daughter, Princess Xela, upon whom they doted and fussed, and due to their ministrations, or perhaps in spite of th...

Male Scent May Compromise Biomedical Research | Science/AAAS | News
Jeffrey Mogil's students suspected there was something fishy going on with their experiments. They were injecting an irritant into the feet of mice to test their pain response, but the rodents didn't seem to feel anything. "We thought there was something wrong with the injection," says Mogil, a neuroscientist at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. The real culprit was far more surprising: The mice that didn't feel pain had been handled by male students. Mogil's group discovered that this gender distinction alone was enough to throw off their whole experiment—and likely influences the work of other researcher...

Deepest Health Podcast 31 – Chinese medicine in veterinary practice : Interview with Dr. Neal Sivula, DVM, PhD
Today on the podcast, I have the pleasure of introducing my very favorite veterinarian to the Chinese Medicine Central community. Neal Sivula is a long-time reader and student of Chinese Medicine Central, but that’s the least of his many distinctions! He founded and practices at Dancing Paws Animal Wellness Center in Richfield, OH, and has a number of distinctions you can read all about over at his about me site. He has helped the classical Chinese medicine message reach a wider audience by helping me be accepted to speak at the Midwest Veterinary Conference two years in a row and I’ll be joining him here in P...

Deepest Health Podcast 30 – Towards a systematic view of Deepest Business Health
Today on the podcast, I explore how I approach helping Chinese medicine students and practitioners have true health in their businesses. This is an important topic for me, and one that is becoming increasingly a part of my daily focus. In the podcast, I talk about five basic elements of every healthy business, what those elements involve, and how we might want to start thinking about them. I emphasize the complexity and fun of business, and open the door for your thoughts and questions. As has been my habit, I also dig into a few little features. I mention the diversity of acupuncture related projects on Indiegogo, some of...

Tramadol: Uses, Side-Effects, and Interactions
When it comes to pain pills, tramadol is one of the most common prescription painkillers currently prescribed by doctors. It is often used to manage severe pain and it is readily available.  In fact, you can even buy tramadol online in the UK without a prescription.  At least, you don’t need a prescription when you start the process. In reality, however, the legitimate sites that let you buy tramadol with no prescription have doctors who issue a prescription for the purchase. I found out that some pharmacies in the UK even include a doctor’s prescription in the cost of the medication.  Visit this site for more infor...

Maybe they thought it was 267,153 kangaroos
Federico Girosi, Associate Professor in Population Health at the School of Medicine, University of Western Sydney, posted the following story on Facebook:We just submitted a paper to BMC Public Health. This was their reply: "Thank you for your recent submission of the manuscript "People with multiple unhealthy lifestyles are less likely to consult primary healthcare. Evidence from 267,153 Australians". We have now looked over your manuscript and we feel that it is out of scope for the journal. However, we do feel that the manuscript may be suited for another of our journals, BMC Veterinary Research." (Source: Running a hospital)

Recent FDA Moves Suggests Agency Is Again Taking Its Role of "Protecting Public Health" Seriously
As a patient with type 1 diabetes, I have found myself at odds with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on a number of things the agency has done in recent years (actually since the 1980s), and perhaps even more so in recent years.  In fact, I once joked (only halfheartedly) that the acronym "FDA" stood for Fatal Drug Administration.  Indeed, for a number of years (under the leadership of chief Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach especially, he pushed for FDA to serve what he called its "clients", meaning the companies that the FDA regulates, rather than protecting public safety).  Staff in areas for brand new...

How Offal! Global Warming Threatens the World’s Haggis Supply!!
Patrick J. Michaels and Paul C. "Chip" Knappenberger Global Science Report is a feature from the Center for the Study of Science, where we highlight one or two important new items in the scientific literature or the popular media. For broader and more technical perspectives, consult our monthly “Current Wisdom.” In this edition, we cover an important story that we missed back in 2008. People send us stuff. As a result of our recent Global Science Report on global warming ruining our bananas, one of our fans directed our attention to an important effect of climate change that we somehow missed, back in 2008, ...
