“We’re talking about a hamster, for God’s sake!”
Janice Lynch Schuster of the Altarum Institute has written a warm and delightful article for Aging Today, the newspaper of the American Society on Aging.  It's called "Goodbye to Jumpy: Lessons for the health system."  Using the example of the family's pet hamster, she draws some good lessons about end-of-life work.  Excerpts:In the early days of what would prove to be, in hamster years, a long illness, Jumpy just didn’t look right: his ears were swollen and he scratched incessantly. Diagnosing either a parasitic infection or an allergic reaction, our vet treated Jumpy with the full arsenal of veterinary w...

Natalie Irish: Artist with Diabetes.
Natalie Irish is an artist who paints portraits with her mouth, using lipstick as her "paint" and her lips as the brush.  While this is impressive all on its own, she creates her art all while wearing her pink insulin pump on her hip.  I heard of Natalie through my friends at Animas, and when I watched her on Conan O'Brien, talking about her artwork with her insulin pump infusion set up on her arm, I knew I wanted to know more.  Natalie was kind enough to spend some time chatting with me on the phone, and the girl is an advocacy powerhouse, using her talent and creativity to bring both art, and dia...

A Bird's Eye View of Family Medicine
Considerable time has passed since I last made an entry to my blog site. Basically, I ’ve decided the healthcare train is going down the tracks in its predetermined direction and nothing I say or do is likely to change the direction or the time interval at which it slows down, stops, and considers a new direction. Meanwhile I have decided to continue in my small way to help those t hat fall between the “train tracks” by doing a bit of palliative care and giving sought after advice by some of my friends. < br / > I ’m writing today to suggest a totally new and novel approach to the shortage of family physicians...

Peggy Hamburg: A Complete Response
The FDA is not a monolithic entity. The agency is comprised of over 16,000 dedicated public servants whose areas of expertise and responsibilities range from pharmaceuticals to food, veterinary products, cosmetics, medical technology, dietary supplements, and beyond. No one person calls all the shots – but the Commissioner is in charge and sets the tone and direction of the body that regulates more than a quarter of the American economy. A really good commissioner is measured by the impact he continues to have once she has departed. By that measure Peggy Hamburg rates an “A.” (Source: drugwonks.com Blog)
