What Is a Deeper Relationship?
As I’ve been reading through recent feedback emails regarding the upcoming Guild course, I’ve seen various expressions of a desire for “deeper relationships.” What does that actually mean? Many people shared that their current social circle feels too fragmented. They have their work associates, their family relationships, their online friends, and perhaps a few other networks like for hobbies or fitness. That by itself isn’t a problem, but what people perceive as problematic is that they’re only able to connect with each of these groups with a few limited aspects of their personalitie...

Why I Love To Think in Terms of Frames
This week a couple of people asked me about frames and reframing and how I got into using this particular approach to personal development, so I thought I’d share a quick piece about this. Our courses in particular includes lots and lots of different frames for solving practical problems in many areas of life. What Is a Frame? A frame is a way of representing a problem or situation. With respect to self-development, a frame typically assigns meaning to events. I think you’ll ready understand this with a simple example. Suppose someone says: My wife cheated on me. The word “cheated” is...

Red Meat Increases Cardiovascular Risk via Raised TMAO Production by the Gut Microbiome
More research into aging and the gut microbiome is taking place these days. A greater investment into this line of research will, as illustrated here, likely lead to a greater knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the known correlations between diet and age-related conditions. That red meat consumption increases cardiovascular risk is quite well established from epidemiological data, and here researchers outline their view of why this happens. One might contrast this with the present consensus, which is that red meat consumption increases lipid levels in the bloodstream, thereby accelerating atherosclerosis and consequent...

Stolen Recipes
About a month ago, I did something I never envisioned I might do. I was in CVS waiting for the pharmacist to give me a flu shot, and while I was waiting, I browsed the magazine rack. I looked at one which was entirely recipes. There was a recipe which kind of caught my eye: it was for " Loaded Cauliflower Soup " . I would have bought the entire magazine, but then I looked at the price: a stunning $12.99...for a MAGAZINE with a flimsy cover (not even a real book). So I opened said magazine and snapped a photograph of the recipe on my phone instead. I suppose one could call that theft, except that I did not remove the magazin...

What Is Better Motivational Fuel Than Stress or Anxiety?
If you don’t want to use stress or anxiety as your primary motivational fuel, what kind of fuel would you like to use instead? What can you say about your desired fuel source for taking action and getting results? I like to think of spending a day at an amusement park as a good analogy for my ideal type of work motivation. When Rachelle and I spend a few days together at Disneyland, we always take a lot of action and have days full of fun together. We don’t need anxiety, fear, or worry to motivate us to act. We virtually never go for just one day. We typically go for 3-4 days in a row. This eliminates any f...

Even Some Meat-Eaters Are Disgusted By Meat — And Encouraging Those Feelings Could Help Reduce Consumption
By Emily Reynolds While some vegetarians yearn for meat (and occasionally give into temptation), others who eschew animal products find meat repulsive. Those who go veggie for moral reasons — as opposed to those who do it for their health — are particularly likely to find meat disgusting, even if they previously enjoyed its taste. According to a new study from a University of Exeter team, it isn’t just vegetarians who find the look of meat disgusting, either — sometimes, meat-eaters do too. And in a world where many of us are being encouraged to give up meat for the sake of the environment, the researchers ...

Are Social Media Companies Common Carriers?
Matthew FeeneyDuring Donald Trump ’s presidency, many Republican lawmakers and conservative activists took steps to address perceived anti‐conservative bias in “Big Tech.” The most prominent of these efforts fit into two categories: proposed amendments to Section 230 and executive branch action. More recently, legal schol ars, policy analysts, and one Supreme Court justice have considered a third option—common carriage regulation—as a means to force prominent social media companies to host more speech. Such an approach would require these social media companies to treat all legal content equally and refrai...

Aligned Solutions
Aligning your life can be very challenging. By alignment I’m referring to harmonious interactions among your: thoughtsfeelingsframes / perspectiveslifestyleliving situationrelationshipsvaluesdesiresgoalsintentionsworkfinanceshealthbodyfamilyfriendshipssocial lifepersonality We all have misalignments to deal with in one of more areas of life. Are you actively engaged in correcting those misalignments to create greater harmony? Or do you let misalignments fester? Misalignments have a tendency to multiply. They’re like clutter. Once we start tolerating a little bit, pretty soon we have a lot more to deal ...

Alignment and Diversity
For the annual launch of Conscious Growth Club last month, I mentioned before that I focused on alignment instead of growth. I deliberately avoided investing in obvious pathways to growth that might attract members who wouldn’t be so well aligned with CGC’s values and culture. Interestingly, CGC grew in size by about 20%, and CGC’s internal diversity increased as well. CGC has become more internationally diverse with members from 26 countries this year. It has become more diverse in terms of members of different ethnicities, colors, and cultures. And it has more LGBTQ members than ever before. One thin...

How to Make an Aligned Decision About Joining CGC
Today, May 1st, is the deadline for deciding whether to join Conscious Growth Club for our 5th year together. Last year on this same day, more than 25% of the people who joined or renewed CGC for Year 4 did so in the last 7 hours of the day (between 5pm and midnight Pacific time), so it wouldn’t be surprising if we see a big surge in sign-ups today. That sort of thing has happened with every launch we’ve done. For many people this is a big decision. CGC doesn’t have a monthly membership. It’s year-long experience. And there’s that $1997 price that invites people to think carefully about ...
