11 Best Educational Apps & Web Sites for Kids
Photo by Thijs Knaap. Used by permission.   Most pediatricians agree that a little bit of screen time each day is okay for kids.  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children over 2 should be limited to 2 hours of “recreational screen time” per day.  In our house, we try to limit recreational screen time to one hour per day, but because we homeschool our kids do a lot of educational work online.  And they love it!  Our kids race through their work so they can get to their computers. Here are my picks for the best 10 educational web sites for kids: 1)     Khan Academy Every parent needs to know...

Which Butter (or Spread) Is Better?
By Amy Campbell The world of nutrition is often confusing, even for dietitians and other nutrition experts. Debates (and bickering) rage on about which diet is best for weight loss, how much carbohydrate a person with diabetes should have, and what kind of fat is best to eat. It's not so easy these days to choose a spread for your morning toast or your baked potato. Years ago, folks had pretty much two choices: butter and margarine. Today, we have butter, light butter, whipped butter, stick margarine, vegetable oil spread, margarine with phytosterols, margarine with yogurt, and vegan margarine (just to name a few). How do ...

The Trouble with Protein for People with Diabetes
For some of us who have diabetes the trouble with protein is real. If we have existing kidney disease, we can’t handle a lot of protein. If we follow a vegan diet, the problem is to get enough protein.   But for most of us the trouble with protein is to know how much we need and whether we are getting too much. Many of us think that when we go on a very low-carb diet we have to boost the amount of protein we eat.   It’s... (Source: David Mendosa's SharePosts)

Turn Toward the Problem
By Leo Babauta Much of our lives is spent trying to ignore problems, not wanting to deal with them, procrastinating. Bills are pushed to the side to deal with later. People we have troubles with are avoided. Work we don’t want to do is put off while we browse the Internet. The diet is put off until tomorrow as we eat more junk. Our insecurities are not admitted because we don’t want to think about them. This kind of avoidance, unfortunately, doesn’t work. We put these things off and the problems only fester and grow worse. Bills become late and interest racks up and eventually we’ll have to deal wit...

OZ Naturals Vitamin C Serum – Look at the label
OZ Naturals Vitamin C Serum is the number one best selling beauty product on Amazon this week. Let’s look at the label to see how it works. As you can see below Amazon only lists “key” ingredients whichs always makes us suspicious. We’d like to see ALL the ingredients in the formula! Having said that, our main concern is that the product uses the Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate form of Vitamin C which has been proven less effective (but also less irritating) than true Vitamin C.  There’s only limited ex vivo animal testing which shows it penetrates skin. There is no data showing it converts to asco...

The Neuroscience of the Future
Neural prosthetics, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), “closed-loop” deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices, and a world without human brain disorders. The first three of these are already here... is the last one possible? In the utopian world of The Hedonistic Imperative, an ambitious, admirable (and unlikely) 1995 manifesto by philosopher David Pearce, the goal is to “eradicate suffering in all sentient life” through paradise engineering —  which involves sophisticated applications of nanotechnology, genetic engineering, and psychopharmacology. And going beyond the eradication of suffering, “Life-long happiness ...

The Truth About Supplements
There is no proof that they work! There I have said it. It is a fact that many of my patients and friend don't want to hear. However, at this time, there is no clinical randomized, trial results that show any benefit to any of the many supplements that are advertised and written about on the web. Many of my patients have heard me discuss this with them in the past. When I was in medical school and starting my residency, there were many patient taking Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Both of these have been shown not to prevent heart disease. (Vitamin E may actually increase the risk of heart disease). When I was in fellows...

Surprise! Fat is good for you
Investigative journalist Nina Teicholz’s new book, The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet, is now available. Nina’s eat-the-fat message fits like hand-in-glove with the Wheat Belly lifestyle. You will especially find her chronology of the historical blunders made along the way to the “low saturated fat for heart health” advice enlightening and liberating. It was, as she discusses, the low total fat and saturated fat mistakes that led us down this more “healthy whole grain” detour, the worst nutritional misjudgements ever made on a worldwide scale. I ...
