Au Contraire
By KIM BELLARD Last week HHS announced the appointment of its first Chief Competition Officer. I probably would have normally skipped it, except that also last week, writing in The Health Care Blog, Kat McDavitt and Lisa Bari called for HHS to name a Chief Patient Officer. I’ll touch on each of those shortly, but it made me think about all the Chiefs healthcare is getting, such as Chief Innovation Officer or Chief Customer Experience Officer.   But what healthcare may need even more than those is a Chief Contrarian.  The new HHS role “is responsible for coordinating, identifying, and elevating opport...

Turnarounds are Talent Magnets: University of Chicago Medical Center
By JEFF GOLDSMITH Like birds of a feather, talent in healthcare management often gathers in flocks. The University of Minnesota, University of Michigan and University of Iowa healthcare management programs are all justly famous for graduating, over many decades, an exceptional number of future transformative healthcare leaders. But sometimes, talent comes from the “street”- challenging healthcare turnarounds that attract risk-taking leaders who, in turn, gather young talent around them. The University of Chicago’s urban academic health center has been one of these places. The U of C was (and remains) the la...

Rapid Detection of Misfolded Proteins
Scientists at the University of Minnesota have developed a method to detect misfolded proteins more rapidly and sensitively. The technique could eventually allow clinicians to diagnose diseases that involve misfolded proteins more easily, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The approach involves an enhancement to an existing assay called Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion (RT-QuIC) assay. This assay involves adding a small sample containing misfolded proteins to a larger protein sample, and shaking the mixture for hours. This causes the misfolded proteins to increase in number, allowing...

Dr. William Ratcliff. Credit: Courtesy of Dr. William Ratcliff. “Being a researcher is special because there aren’t many jobs that allow you to spend the majority of your time thinking about the things you find the most interesting in the whole world,” says William Ratcliff, Ph.D., an associate professor of biological sciences and the director of the interdisciplinary graduate program in quantitative biosciences at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta. We talked with Dr. Ratcliff about his career path, research on yeast, and advice to budding scientists. Q: How did you first become intereste...

We ’ re Disrupting Disruption
By KIM BELLARD The Sunday Times featured an op-ed by Mark Britnell, a professor at the UCL Global Business School for Health, with the headline Our creaking NHS can’t beat its admin chaos without a tech revolution. Substitute “U.S. healthcare system” for “NHS” and the headline still would work, as would most of the content.    I wouldn’t hold my breath about that tech revolution. In fact, if you’re waiting for disruptive innovation in healthcare, or more generally, you may be in for a long wait. A new study in Nature argues that science is becoming less disruptive. That seems counterintuitive; it ...

Soft Robot Grows Like a Plant to Travel Through Tight Spaces
At the University of Minnesota, researchers have developed a soft robotic system that can ‘grow’ like a plant. The mechanism allows it to travel through difficult-to-access areas, such as the tortuous gastrointestinal tract or vasculature. The system works by extruding a liquid through an opening in the device, and at the same time a photopolymerization process results in the rapid solidification of the liquid into a solid structure. The device illuminates the extruded liquid monomers, triggering the photopolymerization. This process mimics the way plants incrementally add material to their growing tips and root tips. ...

Required Diversity Statements on Campus: Are They Constitutional?
Walter OlsonRequired statements on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are fast becoming a part of admissions and hiring at universities and professional schools. “A review of the admissions process at 50 of the top-ranked medical schools found that 36 asked applicants their views on, or experience in, DEI efforts,”according to a recent report by Laura L. Morgan for the advocacy group Do No Harm.Controversy has mounted over to the extent to which these requirements,in the words of Princeton's Keith Whittington, function as "political litmus tests, requiring that scholars pledge themselves to believe and advance a set...
