Non-Invasive Brain-Computer Interface for Complex Control of Robotic Arm
Advanced brain-computer interfaces that can be used to control the complex motion of powered robotic arms and hands have relied on electrodes implanted in the brain. These have serious downsides that currently make them impractical for use outside of scientific research. A team at University of Minnesota has now created a control system that relies on traditional non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) to allow people to use a robotic arm to grasp, move, and place objects in front of them. We’ve seen attempts at this before, which were quite impressive but haven’t achieved the natural and seemingly easy mo...

Dec 2, Marian Bailey: Today in the History of Psychology (2nd December 1920)
Marian Breland Bailey was born. A renowned behaviorist, Bailey was one of B.F. Skinner's first graduate students at the University of Minnesota and one of the first applied animal psychologists to utilize operant conditioning. Among Bailey's best known academic contributions was the classic article 'The Misbehavior of Organisms,' first published in American Psychologist in 1961 which she wrote along with her husband Keller Breland. The article caused a storm among the behaviorist community when the authors stated that: 'After 14 years of continuous conditioning and observation of thousands of animals, it is our reluctant c...

Why I ’m a doctor: Life-changing stories from med students
I am a professor of family medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. During their third and fourth years, students must complete a four-week clerkship in family medicine. The clerkship includes a “significant-event reflection” project, in which students discuss patient encounters that they’ve found especially meaningful. Over nearly a decade as a facilitator for these groups, I have heard many powerful and emotional stories. I’ve often felt deeply moved–and admiring of the students for their honesty, courage and humanity. Here are three of many whose stories I carry with me. R...
